2 VOCABULARY Caste System : -a system of division of labor and power in the human society -mostly known in India Karma : -- the concept of “action” or “deed” -understood as which causes the entire cycle of cause and effect Reincarnation : -religious or philosophical concept that the soul or spirit after biological death begins a new life -in a new body may be humans, animals, or spiritual depending on the moral quality of the previous life’s actions Monotheistic : -the belief in the existence of one God. Christianity, Islam, and Judaism are the main monotheistic religions. Polytheistic : -the belief of many Gods. Hinduism and Judaism are the main polytheistic religions. Good Bad

3 ORIGINS OF EACH RELIGION Buddhism : Founder- the Buddha Started- India Common Now- Asia Christianity : Founder- Jesus Started- Israel/Palestine Moves- Eastern Rome Common Now- North & South America and Europe Hinduism : Founder- None Started- Indus Valley Common Now- India Islam : Founder- None, spread by Muhammad Started- Saudi Arabia Common Now- Middle East & North Africa Judaism : Founder- Abraham Started- Mesopotamia Common Now- Israel, Europe, USA

4 MONOTHEISTIC RELIGIONS JUDAISM Basic Beliefs: - Only one God - The God cares and watches over his people - God loves his people but holds them accountable for their sins - People serve their God by studying the Torah and living by its teachings Spread to: Israel, Europe, USA - Judaism spread to Israel, Europe, USA because countries need to have a religion and spread because of culture. CHRISTIANITY Basic Beliefs: - Only one God - Watches over and cares for his people - Jesus is the son of God - Jesus died to save humanity - His death and resurrection made eternal life possible for others Spread to: North & South America, Europe -Christianity Spread to these countries because every country needs religion to live by. ISLAM Basic Beliefs: - Only one God who watches over and cares for his people - People achieve salvation by following the Five Pillars of Islam and living in just life - The pillars are faith, prayer, charity, fasting, and pilgrimage to Mecca Spread to: Middle East 7 North Africa - Islam Spread to these countries because every country needs a religion and because of culture.

5 Polytheistic Religions Hinduism Basic Beliefs: - The soul never dies but continually is reborn until it reaches enlightenment - People will achieve happiness and divine enlightenment after they free themselves from their earthly desires - Freedom from earthly desires comes from many lifetimes of worship, knowledge, and virtuous acts Spread to: India Hinduism Spread because every country needs a religion to live by. Buddhism Basic Beliefs: - Followers can achieve enlightenment by understanding the Four Noble Truths and following the Eight Fold Path - The Eight Fold Path consists of right opinions, right desires, right speech, right actions, right jobs, right efforts, right concentration, and right meditation Spread to: China, Japan, Korea, and Asia - Buddhism spread because every country needs a religion to live by and culture.

6 SPREAD OF RELIGIONS How did religions move to different places? - Religions move to different places by missionaries. Missionaries are people who travel the world to spread their religion - Ex: Christianity spread to Mesoamerica How does the religion of a location impact the people? - Some rulers demand that the whole location that is under his rule is the religion he choses - In a location that is all the same religion will have citizens doing alike or the same customs
