1 Penny Boat Contest

2 Start your Experimental Design Diagram
Copy the ExD template onto the INPUT page for today. Leave room at the bottom of the page for a Data Table.

3 Data Table Design # L (cm) W H Volume (______) # of pennies 1 2 3
Contest Boat

4 Your group will be given a 15 cm by 15 cm (approximately) piece of aluminum foil.
Your goal is to make a boat out of the aluminum foil that can hold the most pennies. In your notebook (on a loose leaf sheet of paper that is your Insert) write or draw how you think your group should construct the boat.

5 Discuss Allow each member of the group to share her or his ideas.
You only get 1 piece of foil, so agree on what you will do before you do it!

6 ExD Complete the title (capitalize all important words), IV, DV, and Constants (at least 5). # of repeated trials for all levels of the IV = 1.

7 Conduct Trials As a group, decide what dimensions you’ll use for your 1st boat design. Record the Length, Width, and Height (__ x __ x __) as the first level of your IV in your ExD (fill in this info. on your Data Table as well). Test your 1st boat design with a tub of water and a baggie with pennies in it. Record your results in your Data Table (# of pennies). VERY IMPORTANT: AFTER YOUR BOAT SINKS, TAKE IT OUT OF THE WATER AS GENTLY AS POSSIBLE.

8 As a group, decide what dimensions you’ll use for your 2nd boat design
As a group, decide what dimensions you’ll use for your 2nd boat design. Record the Length, Width, and Height (__ x __ x __) as the second level of your IV (fill in this info. on your Data Table as well). Test your 2nd boat design. Record your results in your Data Table (# of pennies). VERY IMPORTANT: AFTER YOUR BOAT SINKS, TAKE IT OUT OF THE WATER AS GENTLY AS POSSIBLE.

9 As a group, decide what dimensions you’ll use for your 3rd boat design
As a group, decide what dimensions you’ll use for your 3rd boat design. Record the Length, Width, and Height (__ x __ x __) as the third level of your IV (fill in this info. on your Data Table as well). Test your 3rd boat design. Record your results in your Data Table (# of pennies).

10 The Competition As a group, decide what dimensions you will use for your competition boat. Record the dimensions on your ExD and your Data Table. VERY IMPORTANT: AFTER YOUR BOAT SINKS, TAKE IT OUT OF THE WATER AS GENTLY AS POSSIBLE. We will compare the boats after the competition and we will not be able to do this if your boat is crumpled.

11 New INPUT: “Penny Boat Contest”
In Cornell (answer in phrases on the right side of the Cornell line directly across from the question): What made the best boats? Explain why this factor made such a difference.

12 Each of these boats have 20 pennies in them. How are they different?

13 Each of these boats have 20 pennies in them. How are they different?

14 What was the relationship between mass and volume?
The bigger the volume, the more mass it could hold. What does that mean in terms of Density??? ↑ Mass = ↑ Density –Direct Relationship ↑ Volume = ↓ Density –Inverse Relationship Density = mass/Volume
