4. Richness of language Children learn language by hearing it, saying it and reading it. They need to hear a new word in a variety of situations. Children like to talk about situations, remodel your talk if they use the wrong verb, it shows they know the pattern of the English Language. Introduce new words. Learn nursery rhymes, songs and stories.

5. Why does talk matter so much? Vocabulary at 5 is a key indicator of GCSE achievement. 66% of 7- 14 year olds with serious behaviour issues have language impairment. 40% of 7 – 14 year olds referred to psychiatric services have undetected language impairment. 47% of employers complain about recruits communication skills. 65% young offenders have communication problems. Children from low income families lag behind 16 months in vocabulary at age 4.

8. Talk for writing Method of retelling a story and building up a bank of stories in the children’s memory. Children need to be able to tell a story really well orally before they are able to write this down. Using actions and pictures to help the children remember. Learn Mr Wiggle and Mr Waggle Show a Talk for Writing story You can practice this with any book your child knows well. Make your own symbols and actions as your children become confident they will be able to retell many stories.

16. Types of Comprehension Questions Give them puzzles. If Joe has two more apples would he have enough for the whole family? Ask literal questions. If Joe came out of the kitchen, who is left in the kitchen? Can they predict what happens next? Why did Joe walk out of the kitchen. Can they imagine alternative stories? What if Joe could walk through walls. Can they summarise a story? Look for patterns and connections, ask about likes and dislikes. If children understand what they are reading this will help them enjoy it more!
