Our Solutions to High School Dropouts Naomi Jones Xia Her

High School dropouts are one of the causes of economic strain in America

How much money could the U.S. save if the number of high school dropouts was cut in half? $45 billion.

Why We Chose This Problem We chose this problem because we are in high school and the ones that will be seeing this in ten years will also be in high school "Only 50% of High Schoolers Graduate"

Dropouts Effect on the US Dropouts students are most likely to be unemployed Can't pay taxes, Less money will go to the US US can't spend much money on important things (paying debts, making foundations to help people )

May go to prison(Taxpayers will have to pay for prison costs; 75 percent of state prison inmates and 59 percent of federal inmates are high-school dropouts (npr.org). Rely on Welfare(Taxpayers pay for this also) Continuation

The US will lose more money There will be more dropouts The US will have to spend most of money on dropouts only US will have to pay welfares, medical costs for them and even prison place If this problem continues on its current path

Key Players The key players are school districts, schools, teachers, students, and the lack of money Secretary of U.S Education

Their Solutions Alternative Learning Programs After school programs Educational Reform No Child Left Behind Act Charter Schools Summer schools

Why It's Their Solutions Are Not Working Throwing failing students into a different school or class which most likely has worse teachers and bad peers around them Not helping the students but move the bad students somewhere else so they won't get less public funding

Their Pros Summer school would allow students to make up works Summer school helps retain the learning that they acquire through the school year Better teachers better learning; better relationships Teachers could make extra money

Their Cons Summer school means spending money; on having summer schools and paying for teachers School districts are low on the budgets Students would not be focused in summer school since it's suppose to be their vacations

Our Solution Have interesting classes that students would actually enjoy Have after school programs that is specifically designed to help student Support from teachers (get motivation and inspiration)

Our Pros There would be more interesting/ fun classes May make students want to come to school After school tutoring would solve student struggles; make them understand the assignment more Getting support from teachers, makes students feel appreciated Students feel appreciated so they begin to do the same things back to teachers

Our Cons Interesting classes means more money used Classes may not be taken seriously Teachers would have to stay after school to help students Sometimes support from teachers may be too much to students; making them feel like they don't have any space

We want high schoolers to be able to take care of themselves in the future rather than depending on the check they get once a month Graduates to help make economy better and be able to help themselves Be a role model for the next generation Conclusion
