1 LESSON 2-2: COMMON AND PROPER NOUNS

2 COMMON NOUN  Is the name of a general type of person, place, thing, event or idea.  Most of the nouns we use are common nouns.  These nouns begin with a lower case letter. Examples: mountain holiday magazine

3 PROPER NOUN  Is the name of a specific person, place, thing, event or idea.  In writing, proper nouns ALWAYS begin with capital letters.  Specific = to single out something  Example: Mount Everest Thanksgiving Cosmopolitan

4 LET’S TRY IT  Tell me a proper noun that goes with the common noun. 1)country Spain, England, Columbia, Nicaragua, France, USA, Russia, Peru 2)state Florida, Kentucky, California, Connecticut, Mississippi, Georgia 3)movie Frozen, Alvin and the Chipmunks, The Fault in Our Stars, Safe Haven, The Amazing Spiderman, The Fugitive, Star Wars, Heaven is Real, The Hunger Games, The Walking Dead, Grey’s Anatomy 4)TV show 5)Month

5 LET’S TRY IT  Identify which are proper nouns in the sentence. Then, capitalize each proper noun. Each sentence has at least one proper noun. 1)My friend Angela loves to swim. 2)Her favorite swimmer is Janet Evans. 3)Janet won three gold medals in the 1988 Summer Olympics. 4)Those games took place in Seoul, Korea. 5)Janet also won a gold medal at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.

6 PROPER NOUNS: PLACES  The names of parts of the country or world are proper nouns.  WHO CAN NAME ME A COUNTRY IN THE WORLD? A CONTINENT? AN OCEAN? A RIVER? A CITY?  When compass directions are used as nouns, they are common nouns.  What are the four directions? Example: Part of the CountryDarnell visited the East with his family. Direction The plane flew toward the east.

7 LET’S TRY IT  Capitalize each proper noun. Not every sentence has a proper noun. 1)Jennifer took a trip to the South. 2)On the first day, she drove 200 miles southeast. 3)She began in Springfield and went to Tennessee. 4)The next day she headed south toward Alabama. 5)She liked the South very much.

8 PROPER NOUNS: LANGUAGES, COURSES AND SUBJECTS  The name of a language is a proper noun.  The name of a course in school is a proper noun.  The name of a subject is a common noun. Example: Proper Noun Common Noun Spanish language Algebra II math

9 LET’S TRY IT  Write the letter of the sentence with the correct capitalization. 1.A. Celia is in the Band. B. Celia took Beginning Band this year. 2.A. Next year Carlos is taking a history class. B. Next year Carlos is taking a History class. 3.A. Angela enjoys all physical education classes. B. Angela enjoys all Physical Education classes.

10 LET’S TRY IT  Write the letter of the sentence with the correct capitalization. 4.A. All of the students take english. B. All of the students take English. 5.A. Yoko plans to study french next year. B. Yoko plans to study French next year.

11 PROPER NOUNS: ABBREVIATIONS  An abbreviation is a short form of a word.  If the word is a proper noun, you capitalize its abbreviation. Example: Proper NounAbbreviation Maryland MD Doctor TurnerDr. Turner Franklin Street Franklin St.

12 PROPER NOUNS: ADDRESSES  Most of the words in an address are proper nouns.  Therefore, you must capitalize what is a proper noun. Example: ms. julie choy [Incorrect] 2760 west 86 th ave., apt. 9 westminister, co 80030 Ms. Julie Choy [Correct]2760 West 86 th Ave., Apt. 9 Westminister, CO 80030

13 LET’S TRY IT  Write each address. Capitalize each proper noun. 14 TITLES  Capitalize the first word of a title.  Capitalize each important word.  Underline the title of a movie, book, magazine, opera or play.  If you are using a computer to write, then use italics instead of underlining.  Put quotation marks around the title of a song, poem or short story.

15 TITLES: EXAMPLES  Song“America, the Beautiful”  BookThe Red Pony or The Red Pony  Shorty Story“To Build a Fire”

16 LET’S TRY IT  Write each title. Capitalize the first word and each important word. Then underline or add quotation marks. 1)Romeo and Juliet (play) 2)The Wizard of Oz (movie) 3)The Perfect Storm (book) 4)“Yellow Submarine” (song) 5)“The Raven” (poem)
