6 Objective(s):  By the end of this lesson the student will be able to: I.Define the term noun II.Differentiate between concretes, abstract, count and noncount and collective nouns.

8 Why we use nouns?  Whatever exists, we assume, can be named, and that name is a noun.

9 Definition Nouns- words that name people, places, animals, and things.

10 Definition Nouns are usually the first words that small children learn.

11 Know the different classes of Nouns Nouns have different classes: proper and common, concrete and abstract, count and noncount, and collective.proper commonconcreteabstractcountnoncountcollective

13 Definition of Proper Nouns  A proper noun is the name of a person, place or thing. Proper nouns should always be capitalized. Dr. Serrano

17 Definition of Common Noun A common noun is any noun that is not a proper noun. Common nouns are not capitalized.

21 Definition of Concrete Nouns  Concrete nouns are something physical.

22 Definition # 2 for Concrete Nouns Concrete nouns can be touched, felt, held, something visible, smell, taste, or be heard.

23 Example of Concrete Nouns  Common Concrete Nouns:  dog, cat, girl, plate, air, water, etc.

26 Definition of Abstract Nouns Abstract Nouns are nouns that name other things such as ideas, actions, conditions, and qualities.

27 Definition #2 for Abstract Noun  Abstract noun- It cannot be touched or seen.  Abstract nouns may be either common or proper.

28 Example of Abstract Nouns  Feelings (such as jealousy and attraction).  Ideas (such as peace and freedom).  Qualities ( such as generosity and determination).

30 COUNT NOUNS

31 Definition of Count Nouns  Count nouns refer to things that exist as separate and distinct individual units. They usually refer to what can be perceived by the senses.

35 NONCOUNT NOUNS

36 Definition of Noncount Nouns  Noncount nouns refer to things that can't be counted because they are thought of as wholes that can't be cut into parts.

37 Definition #2 for Noncount Nouns  They often refer to abstractions and occasionally have a collective meaning (for example, furniture).

42 What is a collective noun? In general, collective nouns are nouns that refer to a group of something in a specific manner.

43 What is a Collective Noun? #2  Often, collective nouns are used to refer to groups of animals.
