GETTING TO KNOW YOUR BERNINA MACHINE

STITCH PLATE Metal plate under presser foot with stitching guidelines on it. Metal plate under presser foot with stitching guidelines on it. The most common seam allowance when using a pattern is 5/8” The most common seam allowance when using a pattern is 5/8” 1/8” 1/4” 3/8” 1/2” 5/8”

Feed Dogs “ Teeth” help to feed fabric through the machine while you sew.

PRESSER FOOT Helps hold fabric firmly in place while you sew.

Bobbin Case Holds the bobbin; allows the bobbin to turn and create stitches.

THREAD HOLDER/SPOOL PIN Holds the spool of thread in place.

THREAD TENSION CONTROL Adjusts the tension of the thread; controls how tight or loose the stitches are.

PRESSER FOOT LIFTER Lifts and lowers presser foot.

THREAD TAKE-UP LEVER Moves thread through upper tension discs.

REVERSE/BACKSTITCH BUTTON Moves stitching backwards. Helps secure threads so they don’t come unstitched.

Foot petal control Controls how fast the sewing machine sews.

HAND WHEEL Controls movement of take-up lever and needle. ALWAYS turn TOWARD you!

STITCH LENGTH CONTROL Determines how long the stitch is. Standard stitch length is ???? A baste stitch is?

STITCH WIDTH KNOB Only used for zig-zag or decorative stitches. Determines how WIDE the stitch will be. For a normal straight stitch, the setting would be at ???

BOBBIN WINDER SPINDLE Allows you to wind thread on your bobbin.

NEEDLE CLAMP When replacing a needle, the flat side of the needle goes TOWARD the BACK of the machine. When replacing a needle, the flat side of the needle goes TOWARD the BACK of the machine.

STITCH PATTERN SELECTOR Shows you which pattern/stitch the machine will sew.

POWER/LIGHT SWITCH Turns the machine and light bulb on and off

THREAD CUTTER A place to cut threads without having to use your scissors.

Most commonly asked questions how to resolve them: How do I wind a new bobbin? How do I adjust my tension? How do I replace my needle? My Thread is caught in the bobbin and my machine wont sew. What do I do? How do I know which side of the interfacing is the sticky side?

RESOLVING SEWING MACHINE MALFUNCTIONS Check whether:  The upper and lower thread are correctly threaded.  The needle has been inserted correctly with the flat side of the shank to the rear. If the upper thread breaks:  The needle is blunt (not sharp).  The upper thread tension is too tight. If the sewing machine does not sew properly, it is usually due to incorrect use. BEFORE you ask for help, check the following:

BEFORE WE CAN GO ON: Each of you need to correctly thread a machine Show me how you adjust tension Show me how you adjust stitch length Show me how you would thread a bobbin Show me how you remove and reassemble the bobbin chamber Each of you will check off with me individually!
