4. JUMP LISTS Jump Lists—new in Windows 7—take you right to the documents, pictures, songs, or websites you turn to each day. To open a Jump List, just right- click a program icon on the Windows 7 taskbar. (You'll also find them on the Start menu.) What you see in a Jump List depends entirely on the program. The Jump List for Internet Explorer 8 shows frequently-viewed websites. Your Jump List missing a favorite? You can "pin" whatever files you like there.Internet Explorer 8 Jump Lists don't just show shortcuts to files. Sometimes they also provide quick access to commands for things like composing new e ‑ mail messages or playing music. 5. PIN TO START MENU If you use a program regularly, you can create a shortcut to it by pinning the program icon to the Start menu. Pinned program icons appear on the left side of the Start menu. Right-click the program icon you want to pin to the Start menu, and then click Pin to Start Menu. Notes: To unpin a program icon, right-click it, and then click Unpin from Start Menu. To change the order of a pinned item, drag the program icon to a new position in the list. 6. LIBRARIES In previous versions of Windows, managing your files meant organizing them in different folders and subfolders. In Windows 7, you can also use libraries to organize and access files by type, regardless of where they’re stored. A library gathers files from different locations and displays them as a single collection, without moving them from where they’re stored. There are four default libraries (Documents, Music, Pictures, and Videos), but you can create new libraries for other collections. The Documents, Music, and Pictures libraries appear on the Start menu by default. Like other items on the Start menu, you can add or remove libraries, or customize their appearance. 7. SNAP Snap is a quick (and fun) new way to resize open windows, simply by dragging them to the edges of your screen. Depending on where you drag a window, you can make it expand vertically, take up the entire screen, or appear side-by-side with another window. Snap makes reading, organizing, and comparing windows a...well, you get the picture. 8. PEEK Peek gives you the power of X-ray vision, so you can peer past all your open windows straight to the Windows 7 desktop. Simply point to the right edge of the taskbar—and watch open windows instantly turn transparent, revealing all your hidden icons and gadgets.taskbargadgets To quickly reveal a buried window, point to its taskbar thumbnail. 9. SHAKE Ever need to cut through a cluttered desktop and quickly focus on a single window? Just click a pane and give your mouse a shake. Voila! Every open window except that one instantly disappears. Jiggle again—and your windows are back. (Who says the old mouse can’t learn a new trick?) 10. SNIPPING TOOL Snipping Tool captures a screen shot of anything on your desktop, like a picture or a section of webpage. You can capture any of the following types of snips: Free-form Snip. Draw a free-form shape around an object. Rectangular Snip. Drag the cursor around an object to form a rectangle. Window Snip. Select a window, such as a browser window or dialog box, that you want to capture. Full-screen Snip. Capture the entire screen. After you capture a snip, it's automatically copied to the Clipboard and the mark-up window. From the mark-up window, you can annotate, save, or share the snip. 11. WINDOWS SEARCH In Windows 7, you can find more things in more places—and do it faster. Start typing into the Start menu search box—and you'll instantly see a list of relevant documents, pictures, music, and e-mail on your PC. Results are now grouped by category and contain highlighted keywords and text snippets to make them easier to scan. Few people store all their files in one place these days. So Windows 7 is also designed to search external hard drives, networked PCs, and libraries. Overwhelmed by your search results? You can instantly narrow them by date, file type, and other useful categories.libraries INTRO TO WINDOWS 7 11

12. UPDATED WINDOWS TASKBAR Sure, the new Windows 7 taskbar is still the same familiar place for switching between windows. But now it's easier to see, more flexible, and more powerful. For instance, in Windows 7 you can pin favorite programs anywhere on the taskbar for easy access. Not crazy about the icon lineup? Now you can rearrange them any way you like by clicking and dragging. Finally, there are new ways to preview windows. Point to a taskbar icon to see a thumbnail preview of open files or programs. Then, move your mouse over a thumbnail to preview the window full-screen. You can even close windows from the thumbnail previews—a big time saver. INTRO TO WINDOWS 7 12

13. NETWORK CONNECTIVITY Connecting to wireless networks and VPN connections has never been easier A wireless network icon is always available in your taskbar next to the clock. If a wireless connection is available, an orange starburst shows over the wireless signal icon. Just click the icon to open up the connections jump list. Highlight the connection you want and just press Connect! INTRO TO WINDOWS 7 13

15. INTERNET EXPLORER 8 Compatibility View Internet Explorer 8 is a new release and some websites may not yet be ready for the new browser. Click the Compatibility View toolbar button to display the website as viewed in Internet Explorer 7, which will correct display problems like misaligned text, images, or text boxes. This option is on a per site basis and all other sites will continue to display with Internet Explorer 8 functionality. When you click on the Compatibility View button for a site, you don’t need to do it again as the next time you visit that site the browser will show it in compatibility mode. If for some reason you’d like to go back to browsing with Internet Explorer 8 functionality on that site, simply click the Compatibility View button again. Try clicking the "Compatibility View" toolbar button to fix the problem. It's located next to the Refresh button on the Address Bar. INTRO TO WINDOWS 7 15

16. INTERNET EXPLORER 8 Enhanced tabbed browsing Have you ever opened a large number of tabs only to find yourself overwhelmed when you go back to review them? Internet Explorer 8 introduces Tab Groups, which make tabbed browsing easier. When one tab is opened from another, the new tab is placed next to the originating tab and color coded, so that you can quickly see which tabs have related content. If you close a tab that's part of a group, another tab from the same group is displayed, enabling you to remain within the context of the current task rather than suddenly looking at an unrelated site. By right-clicking on any tab, you can close the tab, close the tab group, or remove the tab from a group. From the same menu, you can refresh one or all tabs, open a new tab, reopen the last tab closed, or see a list of all recently closed tabs and reopen any or all of them. INTRO TO WINDOWS 7 16

17. INTERNET EXPLORER 8 Improved favorites and history management Enhanced Favorites Bar Now there's a better place to keep track of your top favorites. You can save Favorites, RSS Feeds, and Web Slices to the Favorites Bar that appears across the top of the browser, quickly navigating to the sites and content that you care about most. One Click Favorites Press the One Click Add to Favorites bar button and immediately add the page you're browsing to the Favorites Bar, saving you extra clicks. RSS feeds on Favorites Bar The Favorites bar has been updated so you can drag an RSS feed to your Favorites bar, making it easier to see when important feeds are updated. History sorting The new Browsing History view allows you to sort your history by Site Name, Most Visited Sites, Order Visited Today, and Date, making it easier to organize and locate sites in your history. History searching In Internet Explorer 8, you can search for pages in history by typing keywords, making it easier to locate sites when browsing your history. INTRO TO WINDOWS 7 17

INTERNET EXPLORER 8 Redesigned New Tab page The New Tab page loads quickly and provided links make it easier to get started on your next browsing activity: Use an Accelerator: Now you can use an Accelerator using any text you have copied to the clipboard. Browse with InPrivate: Start InPrivate Browsing and your browsing activities, history and cookies are not retained, and third party web content providers may be hindered from tracking your online activities without your consent. Reopen closed tabs: Reopen a tab that you've closed in your current browsing session, which can be helpful when a tab is accidentally or prematurely closed. Reopen your last browsing session: Reopen all tabs that were open when Internet Explorer 8 was last closed, which can be useful if you accidentally close the browser. INTRO TO WINDOWS 7 18

INTERNET EXPLORER 8 Improved Zoom Adaptive Page Zoom improves upon traditional zoom-in/zoom-out functionality in the browser by intelligently relaying out the page content and eliminating the need to scroll left and right. This will improve your ability to magnify pages with small fonts and be able to read more on the web. A better back button When using rich applications such as mapping on the Internet, you may be taken to the beginning of the application instead of the previous page when you hit the back button.
