doc.: IEEE 802.15-01/088r0 Submission January 2001 Steve Shellhammer, Symbol TechnologiesSlide 1 IEEE 802 Wireless Coexistence Group Discussion

doc.: IEEE 802.15-01/088r0 Submission January 2001 Steve Shellhammer, Symbol TechnologiesSlide 2 Background When 802.15 became a Working Group it was required to “Coexist” with 802.11. This lead to the formation 802.15 Task Group 2 on Coexistence of WLAN and WPAN devices in unlicensed bands. –Build a Coexistence Model –Develop Coexistence Mechanisms

doc.: IEEE 802.15-01/088r0 Submission January 2001 Steve Shellhammer, Symbol TechnologiesSlide 3 Background Recently 802.11 formed the 5 GHz Study Group –Attempt to Harmonize all the 5 GHz WLANs (802.11a, HiperLAN2, MMAC) into a single worldwide 5GHz WLAN standard. –At a minimum, ensure that the systems coexist.

doc.: IEEE 802.15-01/088r0 Submission January 2001 Steve Shellhammer, Symbol TechnologiesSlide 4 Background Recently 802.16 formed the Wireless HuMAN Task Group –Wireless Broadband Access in Unlicensed Bands

doc.: IEEE 802.15-01/088r0 Submission January 2001 Steve Shellhammer, Symbol TechnologiesSlide 5 802 Wireless Coexistence Discussion Up to this point the IEEE has been Reactive to WLANs and WPANs in the same band –Bluetooth & 802.11b in 2.4 GHz –802.11a & HiperLAN2 Should the IEEE be Proactive going forward?

doc.: IEEE 802.15-01/088r0 Submission January 2001 Steve Shellhammer, Symbol TechnologiesSlide 6 802 Wireless Coexistence Discussion If we believe that IEEE should be Proactive, that raises two questions –What would be the function of this new group? –What would be the organization of this new group? (New WG, Joint TG, TAG)

doc.: IEEE 802.15-01/088r0 Submission January 2001 Steve Shellhammer, Symbol TechnologiesSlide 7 Current Plans Keep 802.15 TG2 unchanged so they can continue working on their specific tasks at hand. Keep 802.11 5GSG unchanged so they can continue working on their specific tasks at hand.

doc.: IEEE 802.15-01/088r0 Submission January 2001 Steve Shellhammer, Symbol TechnologiesSlide 8 Current Plans Discuss (starting today) the two open questions –What would be the function of this new group? –What would be the organization of this new group? Form an ExCom Study Group (in March) to investigate these two questions in more detail?
