2 WHAT IS A COLONY?

3 YOUR IDEAS…. 1.A colony is….. 2. Countries such as Britain wanted to have colonies because…. (try to give several reasons here) 3. Draw simple symbols to represent some of your ideas for question 2.

4 A Colony is a territory under immediate political control of another country. Most colonies were run independently, but some were still under the protection and laws of the country they were controlled by. Many of these countries are still connected to their ‘mother’ country, but others have complete independence.

5 MAP OF THE EMPIRE OF THE WORLD IN c.1900 You will be given an blank outlined world map – glue this into your book. You will be need to find the countries in the atlas and colour and mark it on the map. Colour the colonies of each empire in the same colour (ie British Colonies all red)
