Why we caption with Tegrity? Remove Barriers to faculty for teaching online!  Made the decision to caption ALL Tegrity videos produced for distance learning courses  Ongoing (forever) process  ADA 508 was a concern!  And it is the right thing to do

How we caption with Tegrity

 Transcription team: undergrad work-study students Closed-Captioning Why we caption with Tegrity?

 Transcription team: use a “Wave pedal” start/stop speed, etc.  Transcription team: about 2-3x time, $10 per hour  Programmer team: about $15 per hour  Total Cost = ~$25 How we caption with Tegrity Closed-Captioning

Closed-Captioning file requires time stamps [00:00:00.000] This is a recording showing the use and features of the 3M projectors and smart boards. [00:00:05.000] Testing #2 [00:00:10.000] testing #3 How we caption with Tegrity

We wrote a little closed-captioning “Time Stamper” Java program  Takes text transcript and creates time stamped cc input file (*.txt format)  Enter the starting and ending times of the lecture in the (HH:MM:SS) format  Output file is caption.txt  Download: Tutorial & Software (URL)URL How we caption with Tegrity

Tegrity captioning solution  Edit -> “Add Closed Captioning” How we caption with Tegrity

Tegrity captioning solution  Browse to the “caption.txt” file and add it to caption the video How we caption with Tegrity

Sample Showcase Recordings: Legal Environment of BusinessLegal Environment of Business

We mark a closed-captioned session (CC) How we caption with Tegrity

Additional Benefits  Can upload the closed-caption file as additional learning resource for students in additional content section  Captioning makes it easier for students to learn spelling and obscure terms  Can translate transcripts and have subtitles (dual language lectures)  “Searchability”

Accuracy in sync & Pros/Cons  Accuracy: Up- to-US!  By default is around 70-80% accuracy  Enhancement: semi-automatic fix (available)  (3x time)  Pros  Pros:  Cost: $25  100% accuracy in sync  Money stays “in house”  Students learn  Cons:  Time consuming

What we’d like to see change  Moving the closed-captioning under the Instructional Video  Mobile users can see closed captions  Bigger space  more text = higher level of accuracy!  Additional Contents:  Copied at the same time when a user copy a course: in compliance with sections 508 (actual script is included)
