The Role of Communications in Mining Innovation Mining Automation Remote Operations & Control Critical Communications About Us

Overview – Technology Trends in Mining Mining Automation Remote Operations and Control (ROC) Critical Communications EPCM Security Remote video surveillance Data logging and diagnostics

Mining Automation In the next 10 years, integrated real-time knowledge will transform mining decision making and automation processes, opening the way to the automated mine which will deliver significant benefits in productivity and safety. Mine Site Automation Streamline decision making Remove people from hazardous environments Ensure consistency in production systems Control operational costs Better assets administration/management

ROC Benefits Greater efficiency Lower production costs Consolidate business infrastructure Higher levels of communication across sites, departments and projects Complete view of operations from a central location Make business decisions based on relevant/timely information Attractive, safer working environment Remote Operations & Control (ROC) Traditionally on-site work is relocated from a remote location to corporate headquarters, typically in a city or major centre.

The implementation of cost-efficient, intelligent, integrated remote operations is no longer limited by technology, only by the willingness to modernize. Remote Operations & Control (ROC) ROC Requirements Commitment to modernization Process controls technology Integrated communications and corporate network Planned business continuity and network disaster recovery

ROC - The Mine of the Future Key building blocks for automated mine-to-port iron ore operations are being commissioned by Rio Tinto. These include: Mine operations in the Pilbara to be controlled 1,300 km away at a new centre in Perth; Driverless trains to carry iron ore on most of the 1,200 km of track; Driverless ‘intelligent’ truck fleet; and Remote control ‘intelligent’ drills Tom Albanese, Rio Tinto CEO: “We’re aiming to be the global leaders in fully integrated, automated operations. It will allow for more efficient operations and directly confront the escalating costs associated with basing employees at remote sites, giving us a competitive advantage as an employer along the way.” ITC Global supports critical communications needs for Rio Tinto on their ROC project. The information above was taken from Rio Tinto’s January 18 press release.
