6 © 2014 IBM Corporation 6 Inhibitors for progress  We have large amounts of IPv4 addresses, not yet running out...  You told me already 10 years ago and the network is still running...  Other priorities, such as refresh programs, transformation programs...  IPv6 is not 'cool', such as mobile apps, BYOD, analytics... people don't understand the benefit  Seen as a network only project → No urgency to move IPv6- challenges of a global enterprise 6

7 © 2014 IBM Corporation 7 Looking back  2005, acquired first IPv6 prefix from ARIN  Established a preliminary address plan and high-level migration plan  Submitted network investments every year – but got little funding  Lab & island deployments, mainly for product testing & research  2011, IBM Academy of Technology study (corporate technology board)  2012, kicked of Network readiness assessment  2013, finished Network readiness assessment IPv6- challenges of a global enterprise 7

8 © 2014 IBM Corporation 8 Kicking it out of slow motion!  2013 –conducted many briefings with executive team (up to CIO), educating them about current state and importance –Projected an Enterprise Program office in the long run, but proposed to start with staffing at least one dedicated person plus an executive sponsor  2014 –Announced a global CIO IPv6 architect (see next page) –Received funding to start proof-of-concept and pilot work –Create a global address plan –Prepare IPAM (IP Address Mgmt) tools to start allocating IPv6 ranges –Start assessing other technology towers IPv6- challenges of a global enterprise 8

9 © 2014 IBM Corporation 9 How can people help?  Nominated a global CIO IPv6 architect / evangelist –Articulate detailed IPv6 strategy, based on Business(!) and IT-Strategy –Engage with all technology towers to get awareness –Develop business briefing material to spread the message –Establish linkages into ARC (Architecture Review Council) reviews Strategy papers Investment plans & Business planning –Enlist buy-in from every technology tower to embrace IPv6 –Make it a 'tick in the box' item for any review – business or technical  Announced an executive sponsor for IPv6 in the management team IPv6- challenges of a global enterprise 9

10 © 2014 IBM Corporation10 What can a Network Readiness assessment look like?  Good advice: Get help from someone who has done that before! –Current state discovery Describe overall global architecture, as well as Geo specifics List inventory and assets –IPv6 readiness analysis List Software and Hardware readiness –Solution alternative analysis Use case scenarios Global routing alternatives Addressing alternatives IPv6- challenges of a global enterprise Data i.e. from 'Cisco IPv6 Solutions'i.e. from 'Cisco IPv6 Solutions' 10

12 © 2014 IBM Corporation12 Readiness assessment - continued  Finally, roadmap & recommendations –Design & plan - prioritize Describe in a few paragraphs for each technology area what the transitional and target state would look like –Addressing plan, global routing, governance structure –Test & pilot Certify hard-/ software, create templates, update standards –Respond to initial business impact Deploy transitional solutions where required –Deploy target state architecture IPv6- challenges of a global enterprise 12

13 © 2014 IBM Corporation13 Building a global Address plan  Talked to other enterprises & service providers  Acquired new single /32 IPv6 prefix (PI space) from ARIN  Why a new one? Three options: – Single PA prefix – Single PI prefix – Multiple PI prefixes from each RIR Need to weigh the risks – there is no guarantee for the future IPv6- challenges of a global enterprise 13

14 © 2014 IBM Corporation14 Address plan - continued  Develop a hierarchy scheme – aggregation is important! –Could be Global – Geo – Country – Site - (Building) –Consider your multi-homing requirements / topologies and the levels of aggregation –Consider the opportunity to include a functional code into the addressing (i.e. Infrastructure, Desktop/WLAN, Guest, Voice,... ) –All sizes equal, or conservative? –Keep in mind a /48 as minimum routable prefix externally IPv6- challenges of a global enterprise 14

15 © 2014 IBM Corporation15 Factors contributing to success  Global standardization: test once, roll-out thousands of times  Centralized IPAM & IP registrar function  Evolution of services (i.e. new WAN offerings)  Lifecycle & refresh programs  Leverage other corporate initiatives such as Mobile, BYOD, Internet of Things, etc.  Think about using controller based WLAN as an overlay  Acquisitions that come IPv6 ready (example: Softlayer) IPv6- challenges of a global enterprise 15
