City College of San Francisco Wellness and recovery model in mental health, culturally congruent and community based 16-unit certificate program & 1-unit pre-requisite 3 semester course of study Helping Relationship & Elective; Community/Group Forums & Internship Preparation and Professional Conduct; Family Systems Practice & Internship Placement

Brief History Of Program Five years of formative research with community, to include individuals with lived experience, families with learned expertise, employers, policy makers, stakeholders, academic institutions, Dacum, and service providers Launched 2010 Supportive service component to program provided by advanced certificate students, graduate trainees, and post graduate behavioral health specialists “Peer Care Management”

4. Brief History Partnership with SFDPH Partnership with the County: City College of San Francisco embarked on creating a recovery-oriented 16-unit career and technical education program for mental health paraprofessionals, with an emphasis on training consumers and family members to work in the public mental health system. In FY09-10, San Francisco's Department of Public, Mental Health Services Act awarded City College a grant to execute a 10-month planning process with a Spring 2010 introductory course and the launch of the CMHC program in Fall 2010. Funding information: each year San Francisco's MHSA contributes approximately $185,500 to cover staff salaries & benefits, operating costs and indirect expenses.

Student Profile Multi-cultural and human diverse students Educational experience ranges from GED through graduate degrees Medium age is approximately 40 years young 85% of the students and instructors identify as individuals with lived experience and/or family members with learned expertise Community advocates, resilient and proactive participants

6. Fieldwork/Internship 1 semester of internship placement, 8-hours per week for 15 weeks, to total 120 hours Individual, group, and family coaching, counseling, education, systems navigation, linkage, WRAP, advocacy, and more Placements are at CBO, clinics, residential settings, Department of Public Health, San Francisco General Hospital

7. Outcomes To date have graduated 35 Community Mental Health Workers with another 22 to graduate in Fall 2013 85% of the graduates are employed or have received a career ladder promotion Graduates are making significant contributions to diverse communities and infusing wellness and recovery into the systems of care The academic milieu has served as a recovery venue

Lessons Learned Students present with a wealth of knowledge Curricula must continuously be updated to include latest developments in the field – information from community – course evaluations Course delivery to meet multiple learning styles Theoretical information to build content knowledge; applied practice in the classroom to develop skills; and internship to grow competency In-house supportive services, instructional flexibility, and personal linkage to campus wide services to enhance access, retention, and success
