B UTTSBURY J UNIOR S CHOOL – A N A CADEMY S CHOOL Implementation The new national curriculum is to be taught by all maintained primary and secondary schools from September 2014. As an Academy, there is no requirement for us to deliver the national curriculum, however it is our intention to follow it. NB: In the 2014 to 2015 academic year, children in Year 6 should be taught the current programmes of study in English, Maths and Science.

B UTTSBURY J UNIOR S CHOOL – A N A CADEMY S CHOOL English Stronger emphasis on vocabulary development, grammar, punctuation and spelling (for example, the use of commas and apostrophes will be taught in KS1). Handwriting – is expected to be fluent, legible and speedy. Spoken English has a greater emphasis, with children to be taught debating and presenting skills. Drama – all children should gain knowledge, skills and understanding associated with the artistic practice of drama.

4 Maximum Effort for Maximum Achievement! B UTTSBURY J UNIOR S CHOOL – A N A CADEMY S CHOOL English The curriculum is divided into 3 phases - KS1, lower KS2 and upper KS2. These phases are split into ‘Reading’ and ‘Writing’ programmes of study. In KS2 they are not split into year groups just upper and lower phases. Reading consists of Word (phonics and decoding) and Comprehension (listening, discussing, retelling etc). Writing consists of Transcription (spelling, grammar, handwriting) and Composition.

B UTTSBURY J UNIOR S CHOOL – A N A CADEMY S CHOOL Maths By the age of nine, children will be expected to know times tables up to 12x12 (currently 10x10 by the end of primary school). Calculators will not be introduced until near the end of KS2, to encourage mental arithmetic. Initial moves to formal methods for multiplication and short division from Year 3. Understanding of square numbers, cubed numbers, primes, factors, prime factors, common multiples etc. over Year 5 and Year 6

6 Maximum Effort for Maximum Achievement! B UTTSBURY J UNIOR S CHOOL – A N A CADEMY S CHOOL Maths Long multiplication in Year 5 and long division in Year 6 Increased expectations in fractions leading to multiplication and division of fractions by Year 6. Roman numerals in Year 3, 4 and 5

Science Enquiry (Sc1) replaced by ‘Working Scientifically’ which is not to be taught or assessed discretely. Content identified within Biology, Chemistry and Physics, skills development integral to content. Greater content demand with wider required vocabulary.

B UTTSBURY J UNIOR S CHOOL – A N A CADEMY S CHOOL Key Changes in Other Subjects Art and Design More freedom to select areas to study More focus on the use of sketch books in KS2. Design Technology Separate section for cooking and nutrition which includes the principles of healthy diets. Understand seasonality - looking at ingredients and know how they are grown, reared, caught or processed. Music Now 6 objectives for KS2. In KS2 children are now expected to use and understand staff and other musical notations and learn about the history of music

B UTTSBURY J UNIOR S CHOOL – A N A CADEMY S CHOOL Key Changes in Other Subjects Languages Now statutory at KS2 Any modern or ancient foreign language can be taught The focus should be on enabling pupils to make substantial progress in one language There should be a balance of spoken and written work, however there is a greater emphasis on writing than in the previous curriculum. Physical Education Competition has a much higher profile than in the previous curriculum. KS2 pupils must compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

B UTTSBURY J UNIOR S CHOOL – A N A CADEMY S CHOOL Key Changes in Other Subjects Computing The new curriculum: Design, write and debug programs Use sequence, selection and repetition in programs, work with variables and various forms of input/output. Use logical reasoning to explain how algorithms work Understand computer networks, e.g. the internet Use search technologies effectively Select, use and combine a variety of software to design and create a variety of programs Use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly. PSHE and Citizenship Remain non-statutory and not included in new NC. RE Continue to follow the agreed syllabus – not in the NC but statutory.

B UTTSBURY J UNIOR S CHOOL – A N A CADEMY S CHOOL Geography Greater emphasis on location knowledge e.g. naming the oceans and continents, and the placement of countries of the world and cities in the UK on maps. Comparison between human and physical geography of an area in; the United Kingdom, Europe and North or South America. Increased challenge in mapping skills development to the 8 point compass, O.S. symbols and complex scaling including six figure co-ordinates. Increased emphasis on geographical vocabulary.
