2 The Nature of AIDS Infectious disorder Hinders the immune system and its function Kills T cells, which fight off infections Vulnerable to “opportunistic infections”

3 Causes and Development Comes from HIV HIV becomes AIDS when T cell (CD4 cells) count drops below 200 Unprotected intercourse Unsanitary needles Sometimes transmitted at birth

4 Who Gets it? Everyone is susceptible to to AIDS Drug users and homosexual men are the most common

5 Statistics 1.3 million people are living with HIV/AIDS in the US 1 in 6 are unaware of their condition Gay and bisexual are the most commonly affected African Americans 1 in 4 new infections are ages 13 to 24

6 Signs and Symptoms In early stages of HIV Extreme flu like symptoms (fever, swollen glands, headaches, muscle soreness and fatigue) Once progressed to aids Rapid weight loss Prolonged swelling of the lymph glands in the armpits, groin, or neck Diarrhea that lasts for more than a week Red, brown, pink, or purplish blotches on or under the skin or inside the mouth, nose, or eyelids Sores of the mouth, anus, or genitals Memory loss, depression, and other neurologic disorders. Eventual death

8 Stress in Relation to AIDS Positive mental health is essential to living a good lifestyle with aids A high stress life can cause the virus to progress quicker Poor mental health can cause the person to neglect the necessary measures needed to treat the virus

9 Prevention Communicable Use sterile needles when necessary (tattoos, blood drives, etc.) Use protection during intercourse Try to refrain from contact with somebody who has the disease

10 Treatment No known cure Exercise and an optimistic healthy lifestyle can slow progression some research has shown that medicinal use of marijuana has been beneficial in easing symptoms
