2 The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 Craig Key, Long Key, and Upper Matecumbe and Lower Matecumbe Keys 423 dead, of them 269 WWI veterans 1 st category 5 hurricane to hit the USA Most intense hurricane to hit the USA It is the only storm known to make landfall in the United States with a minimum central pressure below 900 mbar at 892 mbar 185mph wind speeds. Its eye was eight miles across, and the fiercest winds extended only 15 miles right of the center. Storm Surge 18-20 ft.

3 Path and Land Effected 8/29 formed near the Bahamas as a tropical disturbance 9/1 near Andros Island category 1 hurricane 9/1-9/2 reached Gulf Stream and gained strength to a category 5 before hitting the northern Keys at 8:30 pm 9/4 hit land northern Florida as a category 2 hurricane Continued north becoming a tropical storm over land until 9/6 when it became a hurricane once again off the coast over the northern Atlantic before dissipating near Greenland
