Thurs. Dec. 11, 2014

2 What is waste management?
Collection Of garbage, sewage, and other waste products Disposal Transportation

3 What is Recycling? The process of making or manufacturing new products from a product that has originally served its purpose.

4 What GOES in the Blue Bin

5 What does NOT go in the Blue Bin
Propane /helium cylinder/batteries Hazardous waste Binders DVD’s/ CD’s Toys Tools, scrap metals Drinking Glass

6 Common Misconceptions
Many items seem like they’re recyclable because they’re made of plastic ALL PLASTICS ARE NOT THE SAME Many plastics have different melting points and cannot be recycled together

7 What GOES In a Green Bin?

8 What GOES in a Compost Bin?

9 Advantages Households have reduced their monthly garbage by 44 - 54%
Helps the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions Turns waste into useful products such as fertilizer, compost and renewable fuels Supports a local green economy

10 What GOES Into the Garbage

11 What does NOT go into the Garbage Bin
Items contaminated with food Paint cans Gas bottles Batteries CD’s/DVD’s Paper- Newspapers, Magazines, Junk Mail, Envelopes Food tins/drink cans Household plastic packaging Hazardous waste

12 Impacts of Poor Disposal
Food scraps result in methane greenhouse gas (21 x more potent than CO2) Methane  Many materials that end up as waste contain toxic substances. Toxins contamination - air/water

13 Solutions Reduce, Reuse and Recycle products with less packaging
Give used items to people if they can be reusable Use cloth towels and ceramic plates at home instead of paper towels and paper plates Buy less!

14 Looking at EYCI’s Garbage
Waste Audit Issues Looking at EYCI’s Garbage

Free topping, diamond corner, have excessive packaging Solutions Bring your own containers, cutlery Litterless lunch (no litter left behind) Bring your own plate in the cafe Lug a Mug (go green mugs on sale next week for $8) Use your EYCI reusable bottle Don’t use straws or use reusable ones Breakfast program – Bring your own plates/cutlery Solicit restaurants to change their packaging to compostable clamshells/cutlery

21 Third Issue: Coffee Cups
Not recyclable except for the paper sleeve Solution Bring your own mug (buy a EYCI Go Green Mug next week for $8) Tim Hortons collects their coffee cups Possible school collection in the rotunda with a painted garbage can

22 Fourth Issue: Lack of Education/ Unaware
People don’t know what goes where Solution pairing of blue bins/garbage/green bin to avoid contamination Better signage (larger) to inform staff and students of what goes where Assembly to educate Waste display boards with interactive game in the rotunda/assembly
