THE NERVOUS SYSTEM CHAPTER 5 SECTION 2

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM? Allows animals to detect signals in their environments, process the signals, and react to them. Why is this important? It is important for animals to detect and react to signals in the environment because it allows them to avoid harmful situations.

HOW DOES A NERVOUS SYSTEM WORK? Driven by a stimulus/response relationship. What does this mean? This means that a stimulus is detected by the animal and prompts a reaction, or a response.

TYPES OF CELLS Neurons Sensory neurons—detect stimuli Interneurons– pass information between neurons Motor neurons—carry response information to muscles and other organs

TYPES OF NERVOUS SYSTEMS Nerve Net *least complex Nerve Cord Nerve cord, brain *most complex

TYPES OF NERVOUS SYSTEMS (CONT.) Nervous Systems Different types of nervous systems have different functions.

TYPES OF NERVOUS SYSTEMS (CONT.) Nerve net Nerve cord Nerve cord and brain

SENSE ORGANS The more complex an animal’s nervous system is, the more specialized its sense organs are. P. 184-185
