2 ABSTRACT Anna University has undergone amazing growth from unitary type University to 5 th best University in India. Creation & maintenance of Digital Repository forms the strategy to reveal the hidden treasures of Anna University. This Paper mainly details Necessity of creation & steps involved in creating Institutional Repository Complexities involved in creation & maintenance of IR Benefits rendered by IR Growth statistics of Anna University beginning from the year it got affiliated till today Present status of Anna University – judged by documents published every year Data collection & Segregation under various categories Preliminary estimate of expenditure involved in creation & maintenance of IR

3 INTRODUCTION Anna University established in 4 th Sep 1978 imparts higher education in Science & Technology, promotes research & fosters co-operation between academic and industrial communities Presently 625 Engineering Colleges are functioning under Anna University - 4 constituent colleges with University Departments, 13 Constituent colleges of Anna University, 12 Government & government aided Engineering Colleges and 596 affiliated colleges of Anna University under four regional centres in Tirunelveli, Madurai, Thiruchirapalli & Coimbatore UGC have accredited Anna University with Five Star Status in 2002 which is the highest rating Only science and technology University in the state of Tamilnadu, has a position among top Indian universities in terms of its scientific research output.

4 OBJECTIVE The major aim of this proposal is To develop a Institutional Repository (IR) of the literary/R&D output/scientific productivity of the faculty of Anna University over more than two decades (1989-2012) To enhance the visibility of the productivity profile of Anna University Chennai To facilitate online and open access to the research publications of Anna University Chennai

5 METHODOLOGY Steps involved in creation of IR include – Step 1: Data Identification and Selection – Step 2: Data Collection & Segregation – Step 3: Design & Development Software & Hardware Content Creation and Development Content organization – Step 4: Web hosting – Step 5: Maintenance

7 DATA COLLECTION & SEGREGATION Data collection includes collection of research outputs scattered among 53 Departments in various forms – articles, conference papers, reviews, editorials, etc., Data being collected from the year beginning from 2000 till today is segregated under various categories  Number of Papers being published during this tenure  Type of Papers being published  Papers being published in different subjects  Papers being published in different countries

18 RESEARCH OUTCOME / INSTITUTIONAL BENEFITS Information auditing & Knowledge flow Bringing together scattered R&D out put Bringing visibility of Gray Literature Identify and systematically evaluate the science and technology innovations of the Anna University Chennai Identify the stronger and weaker areas in the Science & Technology research. Identify the Gap areas, and fill the Gap in the R&D of Science & Technology in the Nation Public Accessibility to Scientific Research and Scholarly Information. Promoting the ‘Open Access’ to Scholarly Knowledge concept, created by the University’s research units, for the consumption of Public Commons. Global visibility of the Institutions & Scientists Seamless flow of Knowledge leading to increased scientific productivity and knowledge production.

19 CONCLUSION Statistical data on research outputs being published year after year reveal numerous outputs from research scholars of Anna University. Such valuable treasures of Anna University are not readily available for easy reference for future generation. As a step towards bringing the hidden treasures readily available for young research scholars, creation of Digital Repository is the only solution. Data Collection and segregation is the first step towards achieving such a major goal.
