COMPACT DIGICAMSMOBILE PHONES Traditionally most modern digital cameras have optical zoom which uses the optics (lens) of the camera to bring the subject closer. Most mobile phone cameras use digital zoom. Digital zoom is not really zoom, in the strictest definition of the term. What digital zoom does is enlarge a portion of the image, thus 'simulating' optical zoom. Compact digital cameras use CCD sensors which produces high-quality, low-noise images Mobile phone cameras usually have CMOS sensors so they are more susceptible to noise. Autofocus (AF) uses a computer to run a miniature motor that focuses the lens for you. Manual Focus requires the operator to adjust the focus of the lens by hand.

COMPACT DIGICAMSMOBILE PHONES Utilizes Xenon flash bulbs for better exposure in your photos. Note: Low intensity of the flash; the level of light produced will often not suffice for good pictures at distances of over 3 meters (10 ft) or so. Currently, LEDs (specifically, high current flash LEDs) are being used as flash sources in camera phones. Note: Some high-end mobile phones with cameras have xenon flash but they’re still not as powerful as compact digital cameras.

A few tips before taking that shot  Plant both feet firmly on the ground.  Establish a natural and comfortable photography stance in which your elbows are tucked firmly against your body while the camera is pressed firmly against your face.  Just before you snap the picture, exhale (and hold your breath) and gently squeeze the shutter.  If you've had caffeine (seriously!) or have slight hand shaking, do everyone a favor and use a tripod.  If you don't have a tripod handy when you need one, brace yourself against a solid object such as a wall, a tree, or your friend.

Using your Compact Digicam or Phone Camera Do you feel inadequate because you are just using a camera phone while your colleague is lugging around an expensive digital camera? DON’T. 9 COMPOSITION: Techniques for taking terrific digital photos

1. Light Your Subject Well The better lit your subject is the clearer your image is likely to be. If possible shoot outside or turn on lights when shooting indoors. 1. 11 2. Keep Still In digital photography, the more steady your camera is when taking your shot the clearer your image will be. This is especially important in low light situations where the camera will select longer shutter speeds to compensate for the lack of light. Keep in mind that many camera phones suffer from ’shutter lag’ which is the time between when you press the shutter and when the camera takes the shot. This means you need to hold the camera still a little longer to ensure it doesn’t take a shot as you’re lowering it away from the subject. 2. 12 3. For every subject take as many shots as possible. Remember that on many phones and even camera viewfinders the quality of the screen will not be as good as your computer’s. So if possible hang onto your shots until you can download them into your PC. You might just find that they come alive on a quality monitor. You’ll also find that even ‘mistakes’ and blurred shots can actually be quite usable (in an abstract kind of way) Note: You may try different angles in shooting the same subject. Just move around your subject. 3. For every subject take as many shots as possible. More snapshots increases the chance of having at least 1 good photo. Take as many shots as possible. Do not be afraid to experiment. 14 Using Digital Zoom Using Optical Zoom 4. Avoid Using the Digital Zoom As tempting as it might be to zoom in on your subject when taking your picture (if you have a zoom feature on your camera phone), if the zoom is a ‘digital zoom’ it will definitely decrease the quality of your shot so you’ll most likely end up with a pixilated shot. 4. 15 5. Follow Rules of Composition (and then Break them) Rule of Thirds Don’t place your subject squarely in the middle of your frame but a third of the way in). Simple tips like this can bring life to your photos. 5. Straight, curved, parallel, or diagonal lines are all good at promoting interest. 19 6. Create Active Space in your Photo -give moving subjects space to ‘move into’. -the space in front of a moving subject is the ‘active space‘ -give moving subjects space to ‘move into’. -the space in front of a moving subject is the ‘active space‘

7. Zoom in to fill the frame and to get close for dramatic, interesting photos. -Do not end up with photographs with huge areas of wasted space around the edge. -Have your subject fill the frame. -Use your legs to “zoom in” -Do not end up with photographs with huge areas of wasted space around the edge. -Have your subject fill the frame. -Use your legs to “zoom in”

8. Let Your Photographs Tell a Story Great photographs tell a story about the place and the people they show without the need for captions or lengthy explanations.

9. Do not forget about Photography Etiquette Taking snapshots of every local in a colorful costume may be the best way for a hurried tourist to take pictures, but it leaves a bad impression. In many countries taking pictures of people without asking them first is offensive, and travelers should be respectful of local customs.

There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs.

Get More Memory Have more than enough memory for your camera. Don’t skimp on memory cards. You’ll never know when good photo opportunities come. More memory space allows you to shoot at the highest possible resolution. Get More Memory Have more than enough memory for your camera. Don’t skimp on memory cards. 25 Batteries, Batteries, Batteries Have an extra battery or set of batteries for your camera. Flash recycles faster when using a fresh set of batteries. No more reason to miss taking photos. 26 Optimizing Photos for the Web Photos have to be resized for the Web. For web sites, loading speed is vital. Visitors of a photo site may be prepared to wait for a few moments, but this is measured in seconds rather than minutes. File sizes should be kept at a minimum to maximize web- hosting storage.
