2 The Handa Foundation (THF) is an NGO registered in both the U.S. and the U.K. It is non-religious, non-political, and created to build sustainable hospitals and schools in SE Asia. It was founded in 2012 by a generous Japanese philanthropist named Dr. Haruhisa Handa. It also helps to manage existing projects such as a university, a nursing school, several hospitals, a rehabilitation center, an orphanage and projects for the Cambodian Red Cross. 2

3 Challenges in Health Service Delivery in Cambodia and Laos Overall, the quality of public and private health sector services is low, and this influences access. Health workforce capability that is limited by numbers and expertise: In Cambodia 2.3 physician per 10,000 and 1.9 physician per 10,000 in Laos (2012). Most of them are concentrated in the capital city. Lack of resources, expertise, services, logistics, and data to support the prevention and management of diseases. Reliance of over half of the health financing schemes on donor funding in Cambodia Laos has the highest Maternal Mortality rate in SEA; 357 per 100,000 live birth (2012) There are only 9.7 midwives per 10,000 live birth in Laos (2012) 3

8 HANDA GLOBAL SCHOLARSHIP 8 Handa Global Scholarship Program in partnership with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine was launched in 2014. Scholarships for Masters Degree in Public Health from LSHTM were awarded to four Cambodian medical professionals.

9 HANDA Nursing School in Vientiane, Laos 9 In January of 2010 an organization called Worldwide Support for Development, led by Dr. Haruhisa Handa, supported the Laos government to build a Nursing & Midwifery School and dormitory as well as a building for mother and child hospital.

10 Capacity Building Support 10 Sponsored study tour to Cambodia for the healthcare leaders in Laos to learn from their success in curving MMR.

11 11 Nurse educators from the USA visited the Handa Nursing School for collaboration assessment. At the end of the visit 2 Masters Degree in Nursing Scholarship with Loma Linda University for 2 faculty staff was offered.

12 12 Donated a new 14-seat mini van to shuttle senior nursing and midwifery students for community training and service to remote areas of the country.
