Cultural Movements in the US 1920’s

Martin Johnson Heade 1880 Orchids, passion flowers, and Hummingbirds. Luminism is an American landscape painting style of the 1850s ミ 1870s, characterized by effects of light in landscapes, through the use of aerial perspective, and the hiding of visible brushstrokes. Luminist landscapes emphasize tranquility, and often depict calm, reflective water and a soft, hazy sky.

David Johnson 1867: Study of a Birch

Frederic Edwin Church 1877: Morning in the Tropics

Picasso 1937: Guernica Expressionism: the artist tries to express certain feelings about some thing. The artists that painted in this style were more concerned with having their paintings express a feeling than in making the painting look exactly like what they were painting.

Dali 1932: Eggs on a Plate without the Plate Surrealism - Based upon revealing the unconscious mind in dream images, the irrational, and the fantastic, Surrealism took two directions: representational and abstract. Dali's and Magritte's paintings, with their uses of impossible combinations of objects depicted in realistic detail, typify representational Surrealism.

Charles Demuth 1931: Chimney and Watertower Precisionism - geometric forms, industrial age, this form of art was at its height during the time between world wars.

Flappers Young women, usually characterized by: –‘Bobbed’ hair cuts, usually dying their hair jet black –Heavy makeup, long beaded necklaces –Straight, loose dresses that left the arms bare –Smoked and drove cars

Prohibition The prohibition or "dry" movement began in the 1840s, spearheaded by pietistic religious denominations, especially the Methodists. It revived in the 1880s with the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and the Prohibition Party. From 1920 to 1933, the manufacture, sale, and transport of alcohol was prohibited in the United States. However, the private possession and consumption of alcohol was not prohibited.

Jazz The music called Jazz was born sometime around 1895 in New Orleans. It combined elements of Ragtime, marching band music and Blues. What differentiated Jazz from these earlier styles was the widespread use of improvisation, often by more than one player at a time. Jazz represented a break from Western musical traditions, where the composer wrote a piece of music on paper and the musicians then tried their best to play exactly what was in the score. In a Jazz piece, the song is often just a starting point or frame of reference for the musicians to improvise around
