9. Prohibition The prohibition or "dry" movement began in the 1840s, spearheaded by pietistic religious denominations, especially the Methodists. It revived in the 1880s with the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and the Prohibition Party. From 1920 to 1933, the manufacture, sale, and transport of alcohol was prohibited in the United States. However, the private possession and consumption of alcohol was not prohibited.

What differentiated Jazz from these earlier styles was the widespread use of improvisation, often by more than one player at a time. Jazz represented a break from Western musical traditions, where the composer wrote a piece of music on paper and the musicians then tried their best to play exactly what was in the score.
