2 JML Course Selection Timeline
Teacher Recommendations: Phone calls were made by teachers if a level change was recommended. Otherwise all students are expected to be successful continuing on their current level of study. Rising 7th Grade Timeline *Students brought home letter with course options for parents to review-January 8, 2014. *Mrs. Harper meets with students during Keyboarding classes January 14-February 4 to complete course requests and 6 year plans. * Parents will have until February 14, 2014 to view and make changes online via Naviance Family Connections

3 7th Grade Required Courses:
Grade Level or Honors in the following: English Life Science U.S. History Math: Students currently in Math 6 will go to Math 7. Students currently in Accelerated Math 6/7 will go to Algebra 1. **Students will NOT make math selections, they will be automatically uploaded based on current math course. Also Required: Health and P.E. Technology Education & Family and Consumer Science (one semester of each) **All 7th graders will have 45 minutes of Resource or Spectrum**

4 7th Grade Elective Courses
All 7th Graders will choose ONE Fine Arts Elective: Band 7 (must be currently enrolled in Band 6) Strings 7 (must be currently enrolled in Strings 6) Chorus Guitar 7 Art 7 All 7th Graders will choose ONE Language Elective: Communication Studies Spanish 1, German 1, Latin 1, French 1 (high school credit) (not all students should start World Language in 7th grade, but it is the only way to reach AP level by Senior year) *Accelerating Literacy might be recommended by school

5 Rising 8th Grade Timeline
*January 15-February 6-Mrs. Kenworthy will meet with all 7th graders during Tech Ed classes to make selections. *Changes needing to be made to selections must be made through Mrs. Kenworthy and will be accepted until June 13, 2014.

6 Required Courses-Grade 8
Grade Level or Honors for the following: English Civics- Government/Economics Physical Science-Physics/Chemistry Math: Students who took Math 7 will go to Algebra 1 Students who took Algebra 1 will go to Geometry Students who took Geometry will go to Alg 2 w/Trig

7 Required Courses-Grade 8 Continued
Health and PE 8 Resource-all 8th graders are required to have a 90 minute Resource block every other day.** **Students who take Spectrum will have 45 minutes of Resource and 45 minutes of Spectrum**

8 Grade 8 World Language Choices
World Languages and Cultures (FKA Foreign Language) Level I or II in: Spanish German Latin French

9 Grade 8 Elective Choices
Students who are not taking a World Language will choose TWO of the following: Band 8 (if currently enrolled in Band 7) Strings 8 (if currently enrolled in Strings 7) Chorus Guitar Level 1 or 2 Technology Education Family and Consumer Sciences Art 8 Students who are taking a World Language will choose ONE of these electives

10 Rising 9th Grade Timeline
February 3rd and 4th: FHS counselors will visit math classes to discuss course planning and graduation requirements with the students. February 5-14: Ms. Simpson will be meeting with each student to discuss course planning and make 9th grade course selections. A copy of the course selection form will be sent home with the student for parent review. Changes to the course selections may be made through or by returning the form with a parent signature. All changes must be finalized by June 13th. Friday, January 17th, 9:00 AM-Getting Ready for High School-JML January 30th, 7:00 PM, Freedom High School Curriculum Night April 9th-Freshman Expo at FHS-during school day

14 TJ and AOS Timeline LCPS Academy of Science
September Information Session and Open House September - The deadline for Part I of the AOS application; registration for the PSAT is included in the application. October - PSAT administered at Dominion High School for all AOS applicants. Upon completion of PSAT testing students will receive a short break, then complete the writing prompt portion of the AOS application. October - Part II of AOS application posted on AOS Website. December/January-Deadline to submit Part II Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology  September - Schools begin distribution of applications October - Open House October - TJ Parent Meeting October – Part One Application Deadline December - Test Day (Usually 1st Saturday in December) January - Semifinalist pool notification to all applicants Tuesday, February - Student Info Sheets due to counselors March - Final Notification

15 Expunging Grades Any high school course taken during middle school
Once expunged, the grade AND credit are gone. Students would need to retake the course in order to receiving credit or to move onto subsequent levels. Expungment forms will be sent home with all Rising 8th and 9th grade FINAL report cards. Forms MUST be submitted to the Counseling Departments NO LATER than August 15, 2014: Rising 9th Graders: Submit forms to FHS Rising 8th Graders: Submit forms to JML

19 Summer Options Two Ways to take courses in the summer:
1)LCPS Summer School Middle school summer school is for students who have failed two or more classes. OR to take Math 7 as a NEW course. High school summer school is available for: Algebra 1 and Geometry 2) Online Courses Courses offered will be Algebra 1 and Geometry. *Summer school/ED2020 registration information is usually available mid-May. ** Summer school options are ALWAYS dependent on budget**

20 Course selection tips:
* Talk to your child NOW about appropriate choices. *Pay attention to deadlines for your child’s grade level *Download/view the Program of Studies: JML Website>School Counseling Tab>Course Selection *Contact teacher directly with course questions/concerns. *There will be NO course changes after June 13, 2014. *All students will have completed a 6 year plan and revise it each year.
