1 3 rd Six Weeks Unit Vocabulary On the next 2 slides, what do you think all these stories/images have in common?

4 Vocabulary All books/movies in images are set within a futuristic society that is a dystopia. 1. Dystopia (anti-utopia): an imaginary place where people lead dehumanized and often fearful lives.

5 Vocabulary So if a dystopia is a place that does not pretend to be good and is controlled by government, then what is a utopia? 2. Utopia: a place of ideal perfection especially in laws, government, and social conditions

6 Vocabulary Another concept the books/movies have in common is that within their society’s the government is a totalitarianism. 3. Totalitarianism: political concept that the citizens should be totally subject to an absolute state authority.

7 Vocabulary 4. Communism: theory advocating the elimination of private property; goods are owned in common and available to all as needed. Production and distribution of goods is controlled by the state; therefore distribution of wealth is controlled by the governing community.

8 Vocabulary 5.Collectivism: A theory advocating collective control; emphasis on group rather than individual or identity.

9 Vocabulary 6.Socialism: An economic system in which both government and individuals own properties and businesses.

10 Vocabulary 7.Capitalism: Economic system in which means of production are mostly privately owned and operated for profit providing for a free market (not government regulated price control)

11 Vocabulary 8.Liberalism: Emphasizes individual rights; society characterized by freedom of thought for the individuals, limitations on power (especially of government and religion), rule of law, free exchange of ideas, free private enterprise.

12 Vocabulary 9.Individualism: Doctrine that the interests of the individual ought to be ethically paramount.

13 Vocabulary 10.Objectivism: Philosophy developed by Ayn Rand that proper moral purpose of one’s life is the pursuit of one’s own happiness and the social system should fully respect individual human rights.
