November 2012 Research Research public art and view public sculpture videos. Art TeacherSchedule library and computer lab for student work. Given specific related topics, students will present gathered info as a jigsaw activity. December 2012 Sketch Generate concepts and first drafts of sculpture design options Art Teacher, Mentor Artist Students will work individually, in small groups, and as a large group January 2013 Maquettes Using foam core, create scaled maquettes of proposed designs Art Teacher, (2) Mentor Artists Students will work in small groups. Local artist, David Fish, will demonstrate and assist with scaled drawings and maquettes. February 2013 Final Design Complete scaled maquettes. Discuss visual strengths and weaknesses of each, ultimately determining the final, single design. Art Teacher, Mentor Artist Students will work in small and whole group. March 2013 Order Assign small groups specific parts of the design to draw to scale for laser cutting. Submit scaled drawing of parts for laser cutting from steel. Order all necessary reinforcement material. Art Teacher, Mentor Artist Students work in small groups. April 2013 Assembly & Evaluation Assemble sculpture parts. Students work in small groups to complete the project evaluation. Art Teacher, Mentor Artist Use mentor artist’s studio space for final (large) steel assembly. May 2013 Installation &Summary Prep installation site downtown Lancaster, Ohio. Create an exhibit label (waterproof and on a stand). Installation and opening with invitations to community and school. Create a summary video. Art Teacher, Mentor Artist, Main Street Lancaster committee Installation date is determined by the Main Street Lancaster committee. Invite media contacts. TIMELINE…

5 . 5 "The Bigger Picture: Sculpture for Community Enrichment" Mrs. Shannon Fish Lancaster High School Objectives: Students will… Define and identify “Public Art” Justify public sculpture from various artists worldwide Generate and select themes appropriate for local community audience Interact with a local sculptor (work displayed locally and nationally) throughout the development and design process Collaborate on large, steel sculpture design Planning in small groups Create a maquette in small groups (to scale) Based on aesthetic and conceptual merit, select a design for enlarging in steel Articulate criteria for judgement and modification throughout the design process Select and explain ideal exhibit location on high school campus. (Main Street Lancaster makes this decision for downtown exhibition.) Organize and participate in sculpture installation (include school and local leadership and media contacts). Create summary (i.e. video) including personal statement of learning Complete a project evaluation (survey addressing all listed objectives) Ohio Visual Arts Standards Applied (Advanced) Perceiving/Knowing: 2PE, 6PE Producing/Performing: 1PR, 2PR, 3PR, 4PR, 6PR Responding/Reflecting: 4RE, 6RE Ohio Core Standard Skills Applied Math: Ratio, Scale/Proportion Language Arts: Reading for understanding, Verbal Presentation, Written Expression Social Studies: Public Sculpture and the role in community Science: Physics of sculpture (i.e. Calder)

6 INVOLVEMENT Students – Core group of 19, grades 9-12 – 42 received formal invitations to participate as NAHS members – Open to approx. 300 other Art students, only one joined Teacher: Shannon Fish Mentor Artists: – Ric Leichliter, sculptor – David Fish, woodworker Additionally – Jaymie Kiggins, sculptor – Hocking Valley Laser Cutting – Mainstreet Lancaster, public sculpture initiative – The Honorable David Smith, mayor – Lancaster City School Administration – Community members of Lancaster Mrs. Shannon Fish Lancaster High School "The Bigger Picture: Sculpture for Community Enrichment" 6
