An extract question is where you take a part of the text and answer a question about it by tracking the text, embedding short quotations and making links to themes and symbols. Extract questions focus on close reading skills which is where you delve deeper into the subtext, discovering hidden meanings.

4 Techniques and strategies that are useful to employ when doing a close reading of a passage or text: Analysis - closely examine and analyze the piece, exploring: Depth and subtext - get beneath the explicit meaning of the text, and explore and analyze the deeper, implicit meaning hidden in the subtext. Links to overall themes and ideas - tie in your points about the passage to the underlying themes and ideas present throughout the rest of the novel. Use of specific words/phrases - determine and establish the connotation and significance lying behind a certain word or phrase and explore it fully. Technique and language - investigate how the writer uses specific language and structure to create mood, atmosphere and tone in the text. Tone and atmosphere - look at how tone and atmosphere is created in the piece, and explore how this affects the mood of the text.

Planning and annotations - thoroughly plan your writing, including annotating the text itself, creating mind maps of ideas, and preparing the structure of your piece.
