1 Maine Animals Lynx By: Savannah Silke

2 Animal's Name My animal is a lynx. Its scientific name is lynx canadensis. The males and females don't have special names The young are called cubs.

3 Classification My animal is a mammal.

4 Appearance Their colors are gray, orange, black and white. The weight for a male is 50.6 lbs. Females weigh 28.2 lbs. Lynx have short hair, black hair on the tip of their ears, big paws so they can walk on snow, long whiskers, 28 teeth and good hearing.

5 Movement Lynx are quick and sly, if they were slow they would not get their prey.

6 Diet Their diet is mice, voles, grouse, ptarmigan and red squirrel.

7 Habitat Lynx live in forests and rocky areas.

8 Adaptations 2 important adaptations of Lynx are: eyes that provide good vision for the night feet that are very fluffy so it is quick and quiet in the snow.

9 Life Cycle & Reproduction The male follows the female. Lynx mate between February and March. The mother will usually give birth to six kittens. The kittens stay with their mom for a year. Lynx usually live about 26 years.

10 Behavior Lynx are solitary, which means they like to live alone. Listen to a Lynx here!

11 Defense & Offense Lynx use claws to attack their prey.

12 Enemies Some enemies are: wolves, coyotes and mountain lions. Kittens are attacked by large owls sometimes.

13 Species Survival Lynx were listed as endangered in Maine in 2000. People destroy lynx homes when they cut trees and clear land. Bobcats are more aggressive than lynx are, so they sometimes take over Lynx habitat.

14 Something Special The kittens are weaned at 2 months and stay with their mom for a year.
