What can RUL do? In an initial conversation Joseph Deodato, Mary Ann Koruth, Yuhwei Ling, and Megan Lotts came up with a series of questions for NCSU regarding their project. Our intent is to find out further information to build a homegrown crowdsourcing project at RUL.

Connecting with NCSU Mike Nutt- Digital Media Librarian and Digital Library Initiatives & Jason Casden- Lead Librarian, Digital Services Development and Digital Library Initiatives

How do you go about securing rights and permissions for student photos? Is use of the Instagram comment feature legally sufficient as a donor agreement? Have you ever received any takedown notices?  One can’t send a private message to users in Instagram so really the only contact or communication with users/participants was with the return email stating the copyright agreement/fair use and they spoke with a copyright lawyer/librarian about the proper language.  Never received a take own notice and students were excited and honored when their image was re-used.  Some students said they would take their image being highlighted in the repositories collection more than the iPad.

How do you plan to sustain student interest and participation in the project over the long term? Is the archival component enough of an incentive on its own? Have you seen any drop in participation since the contest ended?  The project is still chugging along and is relative low maintenance. On a week day roughly 1-5 photos submitted each day and on a Monday morn maybe 5-20 images will be waiting for approval.  The incentive was brought in because they asked their student library advisory board (a group of students who volunteer to be fed & talk about the library) if it would encourage them to participate and they said yes.  He did mention that it was the head of the libraries that offered this gift or came up with the idea.  They waited 2.5 months before they gave away the iPad mini and he said that was too long. If they were to do it again, they would probably give about the iPad mini after 1 month.

Have you considered any other possible uses for this content beyond student engagement and preservation?  They have used some of the images for publicity and always give proper attribution to the original photograph.  Mike Nutt would like to see the data @ the photos used for further analysis. He feels like the images really give the library an idea of how individuals are using the space, accessing the space & materials. He feels they could further analyze the hash tags of the students, what descriptors they use etc…

What were some of the unexpected happening or outcomes that you would watch out for if you were going to recreate this project?  Overall the project went smooth. Mike is the person who approves the photos and he said he has only had to take 2 or 3 down, and they were not inappropriate per say. one example he took down was a skateboarder catching some air on the library stairs. He posted it and one of the faculty asked him to take it down because they felt it might provide a bad example.  He said they error on the side of cautious, but also didn’t want to have a heavy hand of censorship.

What can this do for RUL?  Provides further opportunities to discuss issues of copyright  A further opportunity to promote RUcore  A chance to view the RUL libraries through the communities eyes  A chance to further engage with the population that is using the RUL libraries  A potential project for Rutgers 250 th celebration

Mike Nutt said it best… “The collection of images received immediately proved the value of the library in a way they had not been able to before. They got students to sell the library.”
