2 Ken Kesey Born on September 17 th, 1935, in La Junta, Colorado Raised in Springfield, Oregon Attended Stanford University Served as an experimental subject and aide in a hospital ▫ Inspiration for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest Wrote 5 novels, 2 plays, and 3 collections of short stories

3 Ken Kesey One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest was turned into a film and won 5 Oscars ▫ Ken Kesey despised it and refused to watch it Involved in the Merry Pranksters ▫ Jailed for drug charges Eventually settled down with Norma Faye Haxby and their four children Died on November 10, 2001, in Eugene, Oregon ▫ Liver cancer surgery

McMurphy is checked into the psychiatric ward First group discussion is held ▫ Pete’s first outburst McMurphy makes an observation and confronts Harding about it McMurphy starts the rebellion: “I can get the best of that woman without her getting the best of me.” Chief begins to have hallucinations Defiance #1: walking around in the nude Defiance #2: musical demand  rejected and embarrassed  gets Dr. Spivey in on it Defiance #3: seize the meeting! McMurphy proposes a viewing of the World Series and he’s rejected ▫ Lectures the men about courage Defiance #4: World Series vote again  defeated  McMurphy hassles Chief  Chief raises his hand  WIN Defiance #5: sit and watch a blank television screen

9 PART II Nurse Ratched holds a meeting about McMurphy Men take a trip to the pool ▫ McMurphy talks to the Disturbed lifeguard and has a horrifying realization Another group session is held and for the first time, McMurphy says nothing Cheswick commits suicide McMurphy is infuriated  Defiance #6: break that woman’s window

10 PART III McMurphy proposes a fishing trip Chief speaks for the first time... To McMurphy ▫ McMurphy promises to make him strong FISHING TRIP!

11 PART IV Nurse Ratched orders everyone to be cleaned George is afraid and is bullied by the Black Boys ▫ McMurphy and Chief square up with the aides  sent to Disturbed  electroshock therapy McMurphy and Chief are sent back down and throw a party Nurse Ratched finds out Billy commits suicide McMurphy strangles Nurse Ratched McMurphy receives a lobotomy Chief suffocates McMurphy and escapes into the sunset
