1 Europe's locations’ effect on population
SS6G10 The student will explain the impact of location, climate, natural resources, and population distribution on Europe. a. Compare how the location, climate, and natural resources of the United Kingdom and Russia affect where people live and how they trade.

2 Back Ground Before, we look at these standards there are some basic geography things you should know. First, on every globe and many maps there are lines that form a grid. These are the lines of Latitude and Longitude. Lines of Longitude run north and south Lines of Latitude run east and west

3 The Equator The Equator is the central line of latitude. It separates north and south on globes. The equator is also the part of the earth that the sun shines most directly on year round. So, the countries and oceans that are on the equator are VERY hot! In short: The Equator is the Hottest Place On Earth! When you move north or south from the equator the land and sea slowly gets colder and colder until you reach the north and south poles the coldest places on earth!

4 Check it out Look at your world map in your agenda and tell me 3 cold and 3 hot countries.

5 United Kingdom and Europe

6 Climate of the United Kingdom

7 England’s Population Density
On your map color in the areas with the highest populations (two darkest blue areas)

8 Lets compare: See a pattern?
People in the UK tend to live in large urban (city) areas that were built around ports. People live there because that is where there are the most jobs.

9 Why do people live where they do in the UK? For your notes:
People in the UK live in large urban (city) areas on the east and western coasts. These area have the most people, because they are where all the major industries of the UK are located. The industries are in these areas because they were built around ports for trade.

10 United Kingdom and Trade
Because the UK (United Kingdom) is an island (a land mass surrounded by water, it has always been a major trade center. International trade in the United Kingdom goes back as far as the Roman Empire. The first evidence of a reasonable sized trading in London can be seen during 50 to 270 BCE, at which time the Romans built the original harbor.

11 Why has the UK been important to European trade for over 1000 years
Why has the UK been important to European trade for over 1000 years? For your notes: Because the UK is an Island, the UK has huge ports that serve as one of world's largest shipping centers.

12 What are the main natural resources in the UK? For your notes:
72% of the land in the UK is arable (good for agriculture) The seas around the UK have large deposits of oil and natural gas The UK has very few natural resources for export, coal and gas are its largest

13 Climate Trade and Population
Thinking of what we learned about Russia, where do you think most of the people live in the United Kingdom? Most of the people live in the warmer climate of southern England. However, climate does not affect population in the UK as much as it does Russia. The areas near London and Liverpool are the most heavily populated because their huge shipping ports encouraged factories to be built in those areas. Factories = Jobs & Jobs =People.

14 Why does the UK have such a high population density? For your notes:
The UK has an mild climate (not too hot or cold) The UK has many immigrants (people from other countries) The UK is a small island, so the people are forced to live close together in large urban areas.

15 RUSSIA

16 Russia one big country! Russia is the largest country in the world, but for its size it has a tiny population. Russia also has huge amounts of natural resources, buts its problems with trade is one of the reasons that keep it from being the richest country in the world. We are going to examine the following: What are Russia’s natural Resources? Where do people in Russia live, and why? What are Russia’s problems with trade?

17 Russia is one of the richest countries in natural resources!

18 Rich Russia Russia is second only to the Middle East in the amount it has and produces. The chart here does not take into account the millions of tons of oil hidden off Russia’s frozen coasts!

19 Share of total world production in 2009, %
Rich Russia Russia is the world's largest producer of chromium, nickel and palladium, and has the most iron ore reserves.  It is the second largest producer of aluminum, platinum and zirconium. Russia also mines a significant amount of cobalt, copper, gold, manganese, niobium, REE, silver, titanium and vanadium.  Russia also has 1/6th of the worlds iron. Commodity Share of total world production in 2009, % World Rank Chromium (metall) 30.0 1 Nickel 19.0 Palladium 43.3 Aluminum 10.3 2 Platinum 11.6 Zirconium 18.7 Vanadium 13.0 3

20 Rich Russia Much of Russia is covered in frozen forests.
The forests of Siberia contain an estimated one-fifth of the world's timber

21 Russia's rich natural resources: In your notes:
Russia is one of the world's largest exporters of mineral natural resources Russia creates around 20% o the world's oil and natural gas Russia has one-sixth of the worlds iron The forests of Siberia contain an estimated one-fifth of the world's timber

22 Where do people live in Russia?

23 Russia’s Climate

24 Russia’s Climate With the majority of Russia being frozen tundra, what problems do you think Russians face in those areas?

25 Russia’s population

26 Your Map On your map color in the areas with the highest populations—the two darkest brown areas

27 Do you see a pattern?

28 Where do people live in Russia? In your notes:
Most people live in Southwestern Russia where the climate is milder and there are more jobs. The rest of Russia is far too cold for people to live comfortably Southwest Russia is favorable for agriculture most of the rest of Russia is not.

29 What are Russia’s problems with trade?

30 Why trade is difficult in Russia?
Russia is unfavorably located in relation to major sea lane trade routes of the world which inhibits (slows or stops) trade. Most of the northern coast stays frozen year round.

31 Russia’s size and obstacles to trade
Russia is 6,200 miles from east to west. While the US is only 3400 miles. USA Siberia Comparison

32 The great distances involved in moving products across Russia also create a natural trade barrier

33 Draw the Ural Mountains on your map
The Ural mountains split Russia from east to west creating a natural trade barrier or something that slows or stops trade. Draw the Ural Mountains on your map

34 Why trade is difficult in Russia? In your notes:
Long distances and dangerously cold climate between resources and populations The Ural Mountains separate the country between east and west Western Russia has few ports, and many of those are frozen in winter Why trade is difficult in Russia? In your notes:

35 Population and Climate
How does climate affect population in Russia? People in Russia tend to live in the few areas where the climate is mild, which is still much colder than most places in the continental United States! What are some of the possible problems that affect Russians because of their climate? <HINT: think food> Most of Russia is unable to farm for its own food. Also trade with eastern Russia is made very difficult because of the huge distances goods need to travel. The harsh climate also makes trade with eastern Russia a problem. Think Ice Road Truckers and you will have an idea of what many places in Russia are like in the winter.

36 Comparing Russia and the UK
Russia is the worlds largest country! It covers 16,995,800 square kilometer. It is larger than all of Europe! The United Kingdom covers 244,820 square kilometers or roughly 1% of the area of Russia. The population of Russia is 141,903,979 people. The UK’s Population is 60,943,912 people. So, the UK while only 1% the size of Russia, has 43% of population. Why would the tiny UK have almost ½ the population of the worlds largest country?

37 Why would the tiny UK have almost ½ the population of the worlds largest country?
The UK has such a large population as compared to Russia because the climate allows better agriculture, and because its healthy economy due to trade encourage people to live there! Also, most of Russia is not fit for human population. The United Kingdom RUSSIA
