2 Teacher Instructions Copy 1-per student: LECTURE NOTES – Freedom of Religion, Copy (class set): Reading: Separation of Church & State Review Power Point Presentation as students summarize what they have learned on their LECTURE NOTES. Survey Options: 1. poll the class after each question and ask random students to share their opinion. OR 2. Philosophical Chairs: Hang signs in corner of the rooms (Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, Strongly Disagree). After each question, have the students go to the corner that best correlates with their opinion. Randomly select students to share their opinions. Tell students they can move during the discussion if their opinion changes. Wrap-Up: Review Essential Question

3 Anticipatory Set Read Separating Church and State and answer the questions on the back of the lecture notes…write in complete sentences.

4 Pair-Share Because of the first amendment we have the right to “Freedom of Religion”. What does “Freedom of Religion” mean? What can we do in regards to religion? What can’t we do? What does “separation of church and state” mean?

10 Where do you stand on the separation of church and state?
Teachers should be allowed to conduct prayer in public schools. The Federal Government should be able to give $ to religious institutions like private schools and churches. Religious institutions should be taxed. We should take out the line “In God We Trust” on a dollar bills. Students should be excused for attending religious functions Nativity scenes should be allowed on state/city properties We should take out the word “God” in the pledge of allegiance People should be able to sacrifice animals in the name of their religion.

A wall of separation? Church and government are constitutionally separated from one another However, the government supports churches and religion in a variety of ways, including tax exemption.
