 IMPORTANT: KEEP SLIDES SPACIOUS AND SIMPLE -Review the information in the Unit 5 module about simplicity of PowerPoint. Convert the words on each slide to short phrases (2 to 4 words for each bullet point), so that you follow the 7x7 rule. -Slide 3: AVOID displaying entire quotes word-for-word, unless they are quite short. (the quote on slide 5 is OK) -Slides 7,8 & 9 are too crowded. Reduce the long points to a few words. example: -wide-mouth; -set into river GRAPHICS -Can you add a diagram of a sluice box?

Presented by Andrew L. Johnson

Panning And Sluice Boxes

 Definition: looking for gold by hand  Soil is “gently agitated… gold sinks to the bottom...  Materials with low specific gravity spill outspecific gravity  Materials with a high specific gravity sink to the bottom” http://www.mine.mn/Gold_Pan.htm

Water-dirt ratio Panning techniques: vary Objective: clean rocks from sediment/dirt Ideal: square of water

 State regulated  In streams and rivers  “Where the trout is that’s where the gold is” (Sam from Armadillo Mining Co.)  Black sand  Behind big rocks

 Water :  Never go alone  Be aware of rapids  … sink holes  … flashfloods  … quickly moving water  … first aid kit  Mountaineering:  Never go alone  Bring food  … sunscreen  … water  … personal protection  … first aid kit

 What is a sluice box?  Wide mouth set into the river  This concentrates the gold

Flow of the river

 Construction:  Miners moss  Riffles: low spots in the flow pressure

 1. classify (sort) soil  2. Place into river  3. Manage water flow  4. Place soil mixture into sluice box  5. Afterwards, place into bucket for panning

 State regulations vary  Use to simplify work  Saves hours of work by hand

 Gold panning: fun outdoor activity!  Any age can do it!  Easy to learn!  Great family activity!  Give it a try!  And… you might hit the mother lode!!!
