What is happening to the heat from the core?

1. What are the 3 ways that heat is transferred? a. Radiation b. Conduction c. Convection

Question A cup of hot coffee and a red popsicle are left on the table. 2. What will happen to them? 3. What type of energy transfer is going on in each object?

Answer The coffee in the cup will get cooler until it becomes room temperature. The type of energy transfer is ____________. The popsicle melts until it is all liquid and a puddle on the table. The type of energy transfer is ________________. Why does that happen?

How Heat is transferred: 4. -Heat always moves from a warmer place to a cooler place. -Hot objects in a cooler room will cool to room temperature. -Cold objects in a warmer room will heat up to room temperature.

Conduction: When you heat a metal strip the heat travels to the other end. As you heat the metal, the particles vibrate, these vibrations make the adjacent particles vibrate, and so on and so on, the vibrations are passed along the metal and so is the heat. 5. What type of energy is vibrations of the particles?

Conduction of heat When the metal is heated, this ‘sea of particles’ gain kinetic energy and transfer it throughout the metal.

Convection What happens to the particles in a liquid or a gas when you heat them? The particles spread out and become less dense. 6. Why do the particles spread out?

Particles are spread out because they have more kinetic energy. http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/energy-forms-and-changes As the particles are farther apart, the density of the material is decreased Density is the amount of matter in a certain amount of space. 7. What happens to the density when the particles are cool? Why?

8. Explain this Convection Current b. ________ c._____ a. _____

9. More examples of heat transferred by convection: Where is the freezer compartment put in a fridge? Why? Why is the boiler in a hot water tank on the bottom? Where are the heat vents for furnace in a house? Why? What causes the sea breeze on the shoreline on a warm summer day?
