Inherited Conditions (Genetic Disorders)

I can describe at least two genetic disorders (diseases). I can predict the likelihood of a child inheriting a genetic disorder.

How do we catch genetic diseases? We don’t We are born with them.

Our first disorder of the day… BOSSY IF CRITICS CYSTIC FIBROSIS

What does cystic fibrosis do? Especially the lungs and pancreas. Affects a number of organs. Day in the life of cystic fibrosis Life-limiting and incurable.

Who has CF? C c C c CC Cc cc Probability of a child with CF = 25% (cc) Probability of a child carrier for CF = 5o% (Cc) The allele for Cystic fibrosis is recessive.

Our second disorder of the day… IN SAINTED TOUGHNESS HUNTINGTON’S DISEASE

What does Huntington’s disease do? Nerve cells in brain degenerate. Very rare but very serious. Incurable and fatal. Living with Huntington's

Huntington’s chances? H h h h Hh hh Hh hh Probability of a child with Huntington’s 50% (Hh) The allele for Huntington’s disease is dominant.

Our third disorder of the day… SLEEK MANIACAL LICE SICKLE CELL ANAEMIA

What does sickle cell anaemia do? These die quickly and also block vessels. Oddly shaped red blood cells. Can lead to range of complications and be very painful.

Odds for sickle cell? S s S s SS Ss ss Probability of a child with sickle cell anaemia = 25% (cc) The allele for sickle cell anaemia is recessive.

Last Disorders… HIP I AM A HOLE HAEMOPHILIA

What does haemophilia do? This can make it difficult to stop any bleeding on injury. Blood has trouble clotting. Mainly affects men.

Risk of haemophilia? Risk of haemophilia? H H h HH H Hh h Probability of a child with haemophilia= 25% (h)…will be a boy. The allele for haemophilia is recessive but no gene on Y chromosome!

On your punnet square handouts, calculate the percentage of sufferers, carriers (if any) and unaffected offspring for the following parents. 1.Dad suffers from Huntington’s but mum does not. 2.Dad suffers from Huntington’s as does mum. 3.Dad is a carrier of CF but mum is not. 4.Dad has CF, so does mum. 5.Dad has sickle cell anaemia but mum does not. 6.Dad has sickle cell anaemia as does mum. 7.Mum is carrier for haemophilia, Dad is not. 8.Dad is haemophiliac but mum is not.
