7 Sensor Data Brings New Applications Across Industries
Utilities Weather impact analysis on power generation Transmission monitoring Smart grid management Financial Services Fraud detection based on biometrics Risk management Manufacturing Asset location and performance Event management and response Health & Life Sciences Remote healthcare monitoring Epidemic early warning system ICU monitoring Sensors are one of the biggest contributors of big data datasets, leading to new applications across industries with a variety of use cases. We’ve seen how smart meters are changing how utility organizations conduct business, and we looked at one use cases in the military for assessing health risks of soldiers explosed to IEDs. Military missions also rely on airborne and space borne sensors to detect troop movements and to counteract threats. Sensor data is inherently locational, again playing to strengths of Informix with support for both TimeSeries and Spatial data types. For example, Smart meters have a place in space, as well as a place in their connected network topologies. Consumers with cellphones are constantly on the move, with shifting interests and priorities. The usage of their phones reflects their wants, correlated with their place in space. Airborne and spaceborne platforms generate remotely sensed imagery that is geo-referenced. RFID tags aid in manufacturing and logistics, helping suppliers and shippers track merchandise throughout the supply chain. Traffic sensors monitor traffic flows for planning purposes, and infrastructure investment decisions. 8 Logistics & Transportation Fleet management and dispatch Weather and traffic impact on logistics and fuel consumption Military and Law Enforcement Real-time surveillance and movement detection Situational awareness Cyber security detection © 2014 IBM Corporation

Automatic Table Compression Compress data partitions Compress data rows as they are loaded When a load exceeds a threshold, compression process starts Automatic Compressing using OpenAdmin Tool (OAT) 40% Faster Cisco testing results Space Savings Free space increased by 68% Average log record sized decreased by 22% I/O Improvements Cache rate improved by 23% to 98% I/O operations dropped by 4,400 per second (17 Million less operations in 1 hour) Throughput Transactions increased by 29.5% Total CPU usage increased by 11.8% CPU usage per transaction decreased by 8% Log records produced increased by 27.6% Log space usage increased by 7.8% “The new index compression feature of Informix 12.1 delivers a consistent compression rate of 70% which lets us optimize storage and enables almost 15% increased performance.” - Vicente Salvadore, Development & Business Manager, Deister © 2014 IBM Corporation

10 Informix 12.1: Simply Powerful Faster, easier Primary Storage Manager
Ontape ease of use with Onbar functionality; No daemons, no configuration files. 46 files in ISM vs. 2 files in PSM. 25 MB to 1 MB. Transfer buffer size is 2GB vs. ISM’s 62 KB. OnBar is our fastest solution for backup and recovery because it supports parallel backup and restore. OnBar has a simple interface, however it depends upon an additional component called the Storage Manager that manages the actual devices. The Storage Manager can be very Complex and Expensive. Enters ISM Introduced in IDS 7.3x And XPS 8.2x. As a free SM to use. It was licensed and rebranded from an old version of Legato Networker. ISM is a limited version of networker, it supports only 4 devices and only local connections. It has been stated by our customers that it is difficult to understand & configure and performance is restricted due the multiple layers of software for features they are not allowed to use. XBSA = X/Open Backup Services API – API that manages the exchange between a calling utility and PSM: - Control data (verify that the calling utility and XBSA are compatible and to ensure that objects are restored to the proper instance of database server, and to keep track of the history of the backup objects) - Backup/Restore data (dbspaces, blobspaces, sbspaces, and logical log files) ISM – Informix Storage Manager – IBM licensed version of Legato Networker which ships with Onbar Problems with ISM are: - poor performance, limitation to 4 storage devices, difficulty of configuration and management, - requirement to run background daemons, cannot easily clone an instance from an ISM backup No client side like ISM or TSM. No separate daemon. OnPSM is a simple C-ISAM program that interfaces with the catalogs and files directly Informix 12.1: Simply Powerful Faster, easier Primary Storage Manager ISM Catalogs Storage Volumes OnPSM ONBar ISM PSM Number of program files 46 2 Size of programs shipped 25MB 2MB Number of daemon programs 9 Startup steps 40 Max number parallel streams 4 Unlimited Max transfer buffer size 64k 2GB Integrated with db scheduler No Yes Easy to integrate with OnBar to perform backups and restores Easy for embedded solutions to perform parallel backups and restores Easy for Ontape customers to migrate to OnBar Benchmark results show PSM 3X faster than ISM © 2014 IBM Corporation

11 Informix 12.1: Simply Powerful Enhances Performance for All Workloads

Informix Warehouse Accelerator gaining worldwide traction to accelerate warehouse queries up to 100+ times “For hybrid environments, Informix has a number of unique capabilities that cannot be matched by either conventional data warehousing vendors or traditional data warehouses.” - Philip Howard, Bloor Research © 2014 IBM Corporation

13 Informix 12.1: Simply Powerful Enhances Performance for Operational Analytics
NEW! Trickle Feed Automated, continuous updates of changed data from Informix Warehouse into IWA for speed-of-thought analysis of real-time data NEW! Automated Partition Refresh NEW! Integrated Administration through OAT NEW! Informix TimeSeries + Informix Warehouse Accelerator provide real-time analytics of stored sensor data Informix Informix TimeSeries table Real-time Analytics Warehouse Accelerator When partition-level refresh is not enough real-time refresh for us, or whenever we do not have our data partitioned and we still need incremental updates, IWA is now supporting Trickle Feed mechanism that will support delta updates of rows from Informix into IWA, automatically. Trickle Feed Trickle Feed for Informix is the ability for changes in the Informix data base to be reflected in IWA on a continuous basis rather than either a complete load/reload or by Partition Update. Industry implementation of Trickle Feed is often tied with the concept of “Real-Time Data Warehouse”. While more traditional implementation of a data warehouse usually refreshes data on a nightly basis, the decreasing loading window for many enterprises dictate a much more frequent refresh of data in the data warehouse. The Automatic Partition Update feature, described in earlier section of this paper, does offer a similar capability if the operation is scheduled to run in short intervals. However, the partition update operations, as the name implies, operate with partitions as a unit. This means that regardless of the amount of changes within a given partition, the entire partition needs to be dropped, and then re-inserted as part of the operation. Depending on the size of each partition defined by the user, the number of rows updated can be sizable. The Trickle Feed feature, on the other hand, is aimed at providing near real-time refresh of “smaller” sets of data in IWA. Trickle Feed Setup & Execution A stored-procedure ifx_setupTrickleFeed is executed once to set up Trickle Feed, specifying the Accelerator name, data mart name and the time interval between when buffers are flushed to IWA. Inserts to records on the Fact table will cause the rows to be captured and saved in buffers in an External Table format. Once the time interval specified is reached, Informix will push the buffered rows into IWA. Note that the IWA dictionary is unchanged with Trickle Feed operations. This operation is followed by a Partition Update operation on all dimension tables that have been modified during this interval. This invokes the same operation described by the previous section on RefreshMart. Upon completion, the IWA instance in question is completely “in-sync” and ready for querying as all data inserted into the Fact table and any updates to the dimension tables have been updated. Note that Partition Update operations cannot be executed while Trickle Feed is enabled. A complete reload is recommended after extended Trickle Feed operations in order to refresh the IWA dictionary for new data. © 2014 IBM Corporation
