PROPER FORMAT FOR IN-TEXT CITATIONS

WITHOUT IN-TEXT CITATIONS, MY PAPER IS PLAGIARIZED AND I WILL GET A ZERO ON THE ASSIGNMENT.

All rules for citing are on a paragraph-by-paragraph basis. Every time I start a new paragraph, the rules start over.

I have to know where my paper is going. I need to use my cards and the outline to know what piece of information comes next.

Rule #1 If everything in the paragraph comes from the same source/same page, I’ll have one cite at the end of the paragraph. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~. ~~~~~~~~~~~. ~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (Smith 15). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~. ~~~~~~~~~~~. ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~. ~~~~~~~~~~~ (Smith 23).

Rule #2 Once I’ve established a source, if all that changes is the page number, all I cite is the page number. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (Smith 15). ~~~~~~~~~~~~. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ (18). ~~~~~~~. ~~~~~~~~~ (10).

Rule #3 Once I’ve established a source, if another source intervenes, I must re-establish the first source. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~. ~~~~~~~ (Smith 15). ~~~~~ ~~~. ~~~~~~ (23). ~~~~~~~~ (Jones 108). ~~~~ ~~~~~ (152). ~~~~~~~~ (Smith 5).

Rule #4 I may have two sources in a single citation if necessary. I’ll join them with a semicolon. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~, and ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (Smith 15; Jones 118). I may have two pages from the same source in a single citation. I’ll join them with a comma. ~~~~~~~~~~~~, and ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (Smith 5, 8).

Rule #5 Print sources MUST include the page number in the cite. (Smith 15). Electronic sources will NOT have a page number in the cite. (Adams).

Rule #6 If I direct quote, I’ll close the quotation marks before the cite. “~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~” (Smith 15). If I paraphrase, I’ll just put the cite at the end of the sentence – before the period. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (Smith 15).

And Finally It doesn’t matter if I quote or paraphrase – I MUST cite the source of the information!!! Why? Because papers without cites are PLAGIARIZED!!!
