Rainforests Management LO : To assess various ways in which tropical rainforests can be managed

Recap....Fragile Environments require Sustainable Management Any environment which can be easily damaged is classified as fragile – most environments will recover but we will not be around to see the full recovery. Sustainable is…?

How can rainforests be managed? Ecotoursim Which of these schemes can be controlled by governments which by NGOs? Carbon credits: to set aside forest Non extractive development Sustainable logging

Conservation Indigenous ways of life can also be preserved for future generations. Most rainforests are in developing nations. How can they afford to look after the rainforest? The creation of nature reserves, where development is restricted is one way to prevent deforestation and maintain biodiversity for the future. In Brazil, the National Indian Foundation (FUNAI), is responsible for protecting land for use by indigenous peoples. But, it is unfeasible for governments to protect every piece of rainforest.

Ecotourism Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of the local people.

Back to the Oriente region of Ecuador How is Ecotourism having a positive impact? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0UGQC REe7I

What else in being done in Ecuador … Since the beginning of oil extraction in the 1960s the oil companies have done very little to manage effects of the extraction. Recently the indigenous populations have taken the oil companies to court Texaco have agreed to pay $40 million to help with the cleanup, but the chief of the local Secoya tribe says they need $6 billion. Maxus energy, the company that extracts from the Yasuni National Park, have built and underground pipeline which has less of an environmental impact. They have provided schools for the local Huaorani and Quichua tribes and have invested $60 million in environmental protection.

Carbon credits LIC’s can set aside some of their forest and receive carbon credits. Industrialised countries can then buy these credits off the country and in this way the developing country earns money from its forest. The largest carbon credit project in the world is in Bolivia. The project is based in the Noel Kempff National Park which is an area of 1.5m hectares and has been an UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000. Bolivia has received £25m by selling the carbon credits of this area. The money has gone straight to the communities who live in the areas as compensation. This means that they are no longer dependent upon logging and destroying the forest to farm to earn a living.

Country Example of managementConsequence… How Rainforests can be managed.

Explain the management initiatives used in rainforest areas where resources have been extracted. Use examples within your answer (6) Plenary

Self assess your answer: Level 1 (1 -2 marks) A basic answer simple descriptive statements Level 2 (3-4 marks) A clear answer Explains but is not specific. Level 3 (5-6 marks) Two explained points. Several specific examples
