2 Today we are learning How the signing of treaties and alliances caused tension in Europe before WW1. The 2 sides fighting during WW1.

3 The 1839 Treaty of London This treaty concerned the little country of Belgium. The treaty was signed by Britain, Germany, France and many others. The countries agreed not to attack Belgium and to protect her from attack from others. She was to remain neutral. Looking at the map on the next slide – why do you think Britain was concerned about the security of Belgium?

5 The Triple Entente The Triple Alliance The Entente Cordiale was signed in 1904 between France and Britain. It was a friendly agreement but not a firm promise to fight for each other. In 1907 Russia joined to create the TRIPLE ENTENTE. In 1879 Germany and Austro-Hungarian Empire signed an alliance to help each other in war. In 1882 Italy joined resulting in the TRIPLE ALLIANCE.

6 Turn to your map of Europe in 1914. Colour the members of the Triple Entente in one colour, and the members of the Triple Alliance in another. Create a key in your jotter labelling each one along with the date the alliance was formed.

7 Causes of Tension Overview Having heard all of the reasons why there were tensions in Europe in the run up to WW1 answer the following question – 1. Why was there tension in Europe in the early 1900s? In your answer you must use the following words – BALKANS, EMPIRE RIVALRY, NAVAL ARMS RACE, DREADNOUGHT, TRADE RIVALRY, KAISER WILHELM, TRIPLE ENTENTE, TRIPLE ALLIANCE, BERLIN-BAGHDAD RAILWAY.
