2 1. Allows the reader to learn Rainsford’s opinion about hunting – doesn’t care what they animals experience as they are hunted Allows the reader to learn about Ship Trap Island’s reputation – evil place feared by sailors

3 2. It begins when he is separated from the boat. If he had not fallen in the water, he would not have landed on Ship Trap Island and been hunted.

4 3. Smart, efficient, calm, resourceful, determined, cool-headed
After fifty strokes, he doesn’t lose energy by swimming frantically after the boat Takes off his clothes so he is not weighted down Swims slow, measured strokes Swims in the direction of the shots

5 4. Man vs nature (the sea)

6 5. Man vs man starts when Rainsford encounters Zaroff and is introduced to the hunt.

7 6. Rainsford battles the sea and reaches Ship Trap Island
Rainsford learns of Zaroff’s special hunt Rainsford blazes a cunning trail and Zaroff toys with him and lets him go Rainsford sets the Malay Man-Catcher – Zaroff’s shoulder is injured Rainsford sets the Burmese Tiger Pit – a dog is killed Rainsford makes the tree/knife trick he learned in Uganda – Ivan is killed Rainsford jumps into the sea

9 8. Falling Action – Rainsford sleeps comfortably
Resolution – none – did Rainsford get off the island? Was he punished for killing Zaroff?

10 1. Beginning – Hunting is best sport in the world; Who cares how the jaguar feels?; They’ve no understanding…;Thinks animals do not feel fear of pain or death End – Rainsford knows how the animal at bay feels – it feels fear Change Agent – he was the hunted animal

11 2. Beginning – loves hunting; shows no remorse for inflicting pain and killing animals – who cares how the jaguar feels? End – feels no remorse for killing Zaroff – sleeps his best sleep ever

12 3. Static Beginning – he enjoys the hunt; doesn’t feel guilty for taking human life End – he appears to have enjoyed the hunt; only remorse he feels is that he did not personally get to kill Rainsford; only worry is replacing the dog and Ivan – but for hunting purposes only

13 4. He wants the hunt to last as long as possible
He could have killed him the first night in the tree He could have killed him the second time but leaves to have his slight wound bandaged He goes for a rest after his dog dies instead of killing him

Zaroff appears as the sophisticated, civilized man, yet is a cold blooded murderer – “we do our best to preserve the amenities of civilization here” Wears fine clothes made by a London tailor; handsome face; cultivated voice; drinks champagne and wine out of crystal; eats fancy cut of steak off china and silver; listens to opera music This irony makes the hunt more surprising and shocking Shows the animal in all of us

In the water, Rainsford hears an anguished cry but can’t determine the animal that made it He spots the trampled brush that shows a large animal struggling – but animals don’t usually struggle with the hunter Finds the .22 shells – a light pistol not normally used for hunting Island is called Ship Trap and sailors believe it is inhabited by cannibals Island is a “most restful place” – permanently! Zaroff keeps eyeing him at dinner – sizing him up Zaroff has a new collection of heads in the library Zaroff has red lips and pointed teeth

16 3. Game – the sport of hunting Game – prey or animal that is hunted
Hunting can be dangerous – especially if hunting humans Humans are the most dangerous prey or thing to hunt because they can reason
