Rainsford sets the Malay Man-Catcher – Zaroff’s shoulder is injured

End – feels no remorse for killing Zaroff – sleeps his best sleep ever

Beginning – he enjoys the hunt; doesn’t feel guilty for taking human life
End – he appears to have enjoyed the hunt; only remorse he feels is that he did not personally get to kill Rainsford; only worry is replacing the dog and Ivan – but for hunting purposes only

13. 4. He wants the hunt to last as long as possible
He could have killed him the first night in the tree
He could have killed him the second time but leaves to have his slight wound bandaged
He goes for a rest after his dog dies instead of killing him

Zaroff appears as the sophisticated, civilized man, yet is a cold blooded murderer – “we do our best to preserve the amenities of civilization here”
Wears fine clothes made by a London tailor; handsome face; cultivated voice; drinks champagne and wine out of crystal; eats fancy cut of steak off china and silver; listens to opera music
This irony makes the hunt more surprising and shocking

In the water, Rainsford hears an anguished cry but can’t determine the animal that made it
He spots the trampled brush that shows a large animal struggling – but animals don’t usually struggle with the hunter
Finds the .22 shells – a light pistol not normally used for hunting
Island is called Ship Trap and sailors believe it is inhabited by cannibals
Island is a “most restful place” – permanently!
Zaroff keeps eyeing him at dinner – sizing him up
Zaroff has a new collection of heads in the library
Zaroff has red lips and pointed teeth
