A LOOK AT P SALM 22

I NTRODUCTION Dr. Robert G Lee reminded us that Jesus is the Old Testament as well as the New Testament: In the Old Testament He is promised, and in the New Testament He is presented. Psalm 22 is surely one of the Psalms Jesus had in mind when he said, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” ( Lk 24:44 )” (Crabtree: Zondervan 2012 Pastoral Annual, P 94) The prophetic words of the Psalm and the corresponding passages of fulfillment in the New Testament are most surely divinely inspired. Passages so separated in time and literary setting could not just happen.” (Crabtree: 95)

T HE SUFFERING OF J ESUS (P S 22:1-18) “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” ( v 1 ) “All those who see Me ridicule Me; They shoot out the lip, they shake the head… ” ( v 7 ) Mt 27:46 “ 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (cf. Mk 15:34 ) “ 39 And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads” (cf. Mt 15:29; Lk 23:35 ) Psalm 22New Testament

T HE SUFFERING OF J ESUS (P S 22:1-18) “He trusted in the L ORD, let Him rescue Him; Let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!” ( v 8 ) “I am poured out like water…” ( v 14 ) Mt 27:43 “ 43 He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” Jn 19:34 “ 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.” Psalm 22New Testament

T HE SUFFERING OF J ESUS (P S 22:1-18) “…They pierced My hands and My feet;” ( v16 ) Jn 20:24-29 “ 24 Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came….The other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” So he said to them, “Unless I see His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails. And put His hand into His side, I will not believe.” And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at my hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into my side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.” Psalm 22New Testament

T HE SUFFERING OF J ESUS (P S 22:1-18) “…They look and stare at Me.” ( v17 ) “They divide My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.” ( v18 ) Mt 27:36 “ 36 Sitting down, they kept watch over Him there.” (cf. Lk 23:48 ) Mk 15:24 “ 24 And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.” (cf. Mt 27:35; Lk 23:34; Jn 19:24 ) Psalm 22New Testament

T HE SUFFERING OF J ESUS (P S 22:1-18) Here we have seen 7 sets of parallel scriptures- the prophecy and its fulfillment. Given the centuries of time which has past between these events, how could one possibly doubt the divine inspiration of the Bible?

T HE SUFFERER ’ S FINAL CRY (P S 22: 19-21) For God not to be far… “ 19 But You, O L ORD, do not be far from Me…” For He who is his strength to hasten and help him “ 19 …O My Strength, hasten to help Me!” For Him to deliver his life from the sword, his precious life from the power of the dog “ 20 Deliver Me from the sword, My precious life from the power of the dog.” For Him to save him from the lion's mouth and horns of wild oxen “ 21 Save Me from the lion’s mouth And from the horns of the wild oxen!” A sudden declaration that God has answered him! “ 21 … You have answered Me.”

T HE SUFFERER DELIVERED BY G OD ( V 22-31) God be praised ( Ps 22:22-25 ) The sufferer will praise god Proclaiming His name to his brethren “I will declare Your name to My brethren…” Praising Him in the middle of the assembly “ 22 I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You.” Let those who fear God praise Him Let the descendants of Jacob honor Him “ 23 …All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him…” Let the descendants of Israel stand in awe of Him “…And fear Him, all you offspring of Israel!”

T HE SUFFERER DELIVERED BY G OD ( V 22-31) God be praised ( Ps 22:22-25 ) Reasons for such praise God has not despised or abhorred his affliction “ 24 For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted…” God has not hidden His face from him, but hearkened to his cry “ 24 … Nor has He hidden His face from Him; But when He cried to Him, He heard.” The sufferer will praise God and pay his vows In the great assembly “ 25 My praise shall be of You in the great assembly…” Before them that fear Him “ 25...I will pay my vows before those who fear Him.”

T HE SUFFERER DELIVERED BY G OD ( V 22-31) God be worshiped ( Ps 22:26-31 ) By the meek and those that seek the Lord They shall eat and be satisfied “ 26 The poor shall eat and be satisfied…” They shall praise Him “ 26 … Those who seek Him will praise the L ORD ….” By those from the ends of the earth In the great assembly “ 27 All the ends of the world Shall remember and turn to the L ORD …” All families of the nations will bow down before Him “ 27 …And all the families of the nations Shall worship before You.” For the kingdom is the Lord’s, and He is the Ruler among the nations “ 28 For the kingdom is the L ORD ’s, And He rules over the nations.”

T HE SUFFERER DELIVERED BY G OD ( V 22-31) God be worshiped ( Ps 22:26-31 ) By the prosperous and the dead The prosperous will eat, and worship Him “ 29 All the prosperous of the earth Shall eat and worship;” The dying shall bow before Him “ 29 All those who go down to the dust Shall bow before Him, Even he who cannot keep himself alive.” By the generations to come Posterity shall serve him “ 30 A posterity shall serve Him.” For men shall tell of what God has done 30 …It will be recounted of the Lord to the next generation,” People not yet born shall hear of God’s justice “ 31 They will come and declare His righteousness to a people who will be born, That He has done this.”
