Volunteering England and YouthNet Inspiration and Legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games

About The Project 2012 = The opportunity of a generation to make volunteering part of the DNA of society in the UK Volunteering England’s first ‘operational foray’ into supporting the games Five-year partnership project between Volunteering England and YouthNet Funded by the Office of the Third Sector until March 2011.

THE AIM: “To enable all individuals inspired by 2012 to quickly and easily access fulfilling, relevant and local Olympics inspired volunteering opportunities” THE AMBITION: 1,500 volunteer involving organisations by 2012 100,000 opportunities to volunteer by 2013 100,000 people registering by 2013 Aims and Ambitions

A Simple Definition… An ‘Olympics (or Paralympics) inspired volunteering opportunity is, on a basic level, a new volunteer role that would not exist if London had not been awarded the 2012 Games. Example…

How we’re going to do it Volunteering England are promoting how to create Olympics inspired opportunities with national and regional bodies. YouthNet will ensure organisations are able to use www.do-it.org.uk to post their opportunities www.do-it.org.uk Volunteering opportunities syndicated on wide range of voluntary sector and government websites

Our plans to get there… Seeking out organisations in sport, arts and culture, and environment Regional: existing networks, champion organisations, Regional Implementation Plan, workshops, some one to one support National: current and new contacts, some networks and workshops, Stakeholder Advisory Group Online guidance: providing step by step guide to creating Olympics inspired opportunities

Why you should get involved A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to inspire people to volunteer for sport, arts, environment groups Support available to help with quality, publicity, impact and more… Your opportunity to ensure everything is in place for when people are inspired, so we can offer a seamless experience for them That means starting now

The difference it will make Opportunities for people who want to be involved in the Olympics in their local communities available in one place More organisations that will recognise the value of explicitly recruiting volunteers Many more Olympics inspired volunteers available to fill opportunities

Be part of the 2012 Games Think creatively about how you can use the Olympic and Paralympic Games in your organisation – Why would an Olympics inspired volunteer give their time to your organisation? Add your volunteering opportunities via volunteer centres or V-Base! Be part of the 2012 Games. Tell others about what they’ll gain from being involved.

What does it look like in 2014? Opportunities related to the 2012 Games have been easy to find in one place More people have personal 2012 Games volunteering stories More individuals continue to seek opportunities through the existing infrastructure More organisations regularly use the existing infrastructure – strengthening the voluntary sector’s position and its links with the public

Can you champion our cause? Your thoughts… How could your organisation (or the organisations you support) benefit from having Olympics inspired volunteer roles? How could being part of the Inspiration and Legacy from the 2012 Games Project ‘tick other boxes’ for voluntary organisations?
