1 Understand multiplying and dividing by 0 and 1 Unit of Study: 2 Global Concept Guide: 6 of 7

2 Content Development Approximately two days should be spent on developing an understanding of multiplying and dividing by 0 and 1. Ensure that students have had plenty of opportunities modeling other multiplication and division problems prior to modeling 0 and 1. Multiplication and division of zero and one are complex concepts. Students need hands on experience to understand what 0 groups of something or ____ groups of one might look like. Make sure students understand WHY they cannot divide by 0. Focus on the patterns of multiplying by 0 and 1 to help students make generalizations about these facts.

3 Day 1  Use tools (paper plates and counters) to help students understand the concept of multiplying by 0 and 1.  4 groups of 0  4 x 0 = 0 0÷ 4 = 0  Give students empty plates and have them try and share what is on the plate (which is nothing). They should see that they cannot divide what they do not have. 4÷ 0 If I have 4 pieces of candy and 0 friends to give it to, how many pieces does each friend get? 4 Day 2  The focus of Day two is using the conceptual understanding developed on Day one to make rules about multiplying by 0 and 1.  Utilize a the brainstorming template, such as a Frayer Model, to help students create rules and generalizations. 5 Enrich/Reteach/Intervention Enrich- The Independent Options Enrich Activity on page 139B of the Teachers Guide is a good way to extend students understanding of multiplying by 0 and 1. You can add on to the activity by incorporating division of 0 and 1. Re-teach- Provide paper plates to represent groups and counters to help students visualize the action of multiplying and dividing by 0 and 1.
