6 WATCH YOUR EARS FACT SHEET DANGER FACTORS INTENSITY: the louder the noise the greater the damage FREQUENCY: higher frequency (pitch) sounds create more damage TIME: the longer the time the greate the damage accumulative recommended daily maximum = 15 minutes @85 db PROXIMITY: the closer the noise the greater the damage PERSONAL EXPOSURE HISTORY: is accumulated over a lifetime

7 WATCH YOUR EARS WARNING SIGNS You have to shout to make yourself heard over background noise/music Ringing in the ears – indication of over exposure after the event is a serious warning Tinnitus – permanent ringing in the ears & hearing loss

8 WATCH YOUR EARS MISCONCEPTIONS “It doesn’t hurt, so it’s not damaging my ears!”– our hearing adjusts to the situation by reducing the signals to the brain but the damage is still being done. “It’s only for a little while” – sound levels of 115 db (rock concerts) can damage hearing in as little as 15 minutes. “I’ve been listening like this for years & have no problems” - the effect is cumulative – it will catch up to you!!
