2 Evaluation of the Reading Habits survey 137 students (5th,6th,7th,8th grades) of Mersin 3 Ocak Secondary School answered the questionaire

3 1.What do you like to read? When we examine the students’ reading profile(habits) 5th grade students prefer reading comics and thrillers. Upper class students’ preferences have being changed. It’s observed that the most of the 8 th grade students like reading novels.

4 2.When are you reading at home? When we examine the students’ reading time ıt’s observed that the most of the students read almost every evening because of the school schedule

5 3.What do you associate reading? As it’s seen on that table most of the upper class students’ main purpose of reading is’’ to enrich knowledge and it is for leisure time’’

6 4. Why do you read? As an answer of the question ’’why do you read?’’…the students express that they read to be successful in their lessons, to get knowledge because of curriculum(education system),to prepeare for the exams.

7 5.How do you get books? From 5th to 8th grade students state that they afford the books by themselves. It’s clearly seen in this statement that the school library should be used in more functional manner

8 6.How should books be you like to read? When the 7th table is examined it’ s seen that 5 th grade students don’t have any reading criteria but they read what they have. When the age and level uprise it’s emerged that the type of reading is more clear and the 8th grade students like reading informative and exam-oriented books.

9 7.Do you talk about the books you’ve read? The answer of 7th question of the survey. most of the students give positive anwers.(yes)

10 8.Do you talk about the books you’ve read? If Yes…. The students talking about the books they read express that first they talk with their friends then their parents but they hardly talk with their teachers

11 9.Does your parents read? Most of the students express that their parents hardly read books

12 10.Did you like reading at in former times more than today? The students express that they used to read boks more.The reason of this can be explained with the education system which focus on the exams

13 11.If NO: Why don’t you like reading any more ? The students express that they used to read boks more.The reason of this can be explained with the education system which focus on the exams. When the table is examined the reason of this is the education system focused on exam

14 12.Do You Prefer Other Media? If Yes: Most of the students prefer other mass- medias. When the table is examined it points out that 5th grade students prefer T.V. 7th and 8th grade students prefer internet

15 13.Do you like if somebody reads out to you? When the tables examine most of the 5th and 8th grade students don’t want somebody to read book them

16 14.Did anybody read out to you / or does anybody still read out to you? When the tables examine most of the 5th and 8th grade students don’t want somebody to read book them. Most of the 6 th and 7 th grade students like being read books to themselves. It’s observed that the majority of the students state that there is nobody reads books to them at present

17 Conclusion Students mostly read for entertainment. (such as stories,jokes/humours,comics) (related to1-4- 6 questions) ***Pupils should be helped while choosing books. To increase pupils’ motivation books must be chosen with care. The books should be interesting and curiosity – raising so that they will have desire to read it, such as; books about famous people, popular movies, true stories, etc.

18 Conclusion Most students read at home and during weekends. (related to 2 question)) While secondary school students read for getting knowledge or enriching their knowledge ;primary school students read for ‘’leisure’’. (related to 3-4- 6 questions)

19 Conclusion Creating reading atmosphere and (reading) activities are so important in terms of the students’ reading habits. (related to 5-7 -8 -9 - 12- 13- 14 questions) ***All family members and teachers should talk about books

20 Conclusion ‘’For life long learning ‘’reading to learn ‘’ is essential ‘’ is the main mutto of the students. (related to 3-4 questions) Parents’ active participation is also very important in terms of the students’ reading habit. That’s to say if parents go library with students every week or every month the students spend almost 2 hours or more per week on reading books. (related to5 question) ***The best way to teach is to be a model.

21 Conclusion If the parents listen the students reading books every week or everyday the students read more. (related to 7- 8 questions) If the parents read, students read (related to 9 questions) ***Everyday a period of time can be arranged for reading and this can be called as “Happy Reading Hours”. This technique will motivate children and then it will make a habit. “Happy Reading Hours” should be done not only at home but also at school.
