AIR POLLUTION

Air Pollution created by man Burning of Fossil Fuels  Examples of fossil fuels: Oil and coal

 Burning of fossil makes bad gases known as OXIDES

Air Pollution created naturally Volcano ash Forest Fires

Types of Pollution Primary Pollutants Car exhaust

Industrial Smoke

Volcano Ash

Secondary Pollution Made when primary pollutants mix with natural chemicals in the air. Examples: Smog

Ozone

Acid Precipitation  When fossil fuels are burned, the bad gases they make go up into the clouds.  The gases make the clouds drop acid rain or snow, which harms animals, trees, and pollutes water supplies.

Ozone Layer  Protects us from ultraviolet radiation  CFC’s (chlorofluorocarbons), found in some spray bottles, destroy the ozone layer  Ozone, after it is lost, is replaced by the sun energy and oxygen.

Health affects of Air Pollution

 1. Coughing  2. Dizziness  3. Lung Disease  4. Runny Nose

Environmental Protection Agency  Controls air pollutants released by any source  Created by Clean Air Act, passed by President Nixon in 1970  EPA makes companies use Scrubbers, which clean dirty air.
