2 2 How the Project was formed  In 1997 a group of women in the west end of Newcastle met to discuss drug and alcohol problems they had in their community  Formed a peer support group (Scotswood Women’s Family Support Group) to tackle issues and to campaign for better support for families  2002 received funding to establish a city-wide service and re- launched as PROPS  2007 following a tendering process, we were awarded the contract to develop a service in North Tyneside  2012 Re-launch in July as we are now PROPS North East due to the development of the service.

3 3  Provide Confidential outreach specialist support to: family members, carers, friends, and/or anyone else affected by drugs and alcohol.  Supporting both young people and adults What do we do?

4 4 The model we use Kings Fund Compass Model (Carers Rights)  To be fully informed (newsletter, bulletins)  To be recognised & have my own needs met, including health needs (needs assessments)  Providing a break (respite, therapies)  Emotional support (1-1 and group/structured)  Training & support to care (drugs/alcohol)  Financial security (advocacy work)  Having a voice (involvement).

6 6 Why is it important to support and involve Carers?  Carers have first hand experience of the impact of drugs and alcohol on families and communities  They have a positive influence in helping their family member to: engage, sustain, and succeed in treatment and recovery  Carers have views about the support within services that help and those that don’t  They care about the services that are available in their own areas for themselves and others and are willing to give their time.
