1 Time Time is used to compare the durations of events and then intervals between them.

2 Reading and Converting Digital 24 Hour Notation
Learning Intention: Students will learn how to convert between the 24 hour notation and the 12 hour notation.

3 Vocab 24 hour clock – is a way of keeping time from midnight to the next midnight. It shows how many hours and minutes have passed since midnight. Full day – divided into 24 hours, from 00:00 to 23:00 AM = Ante Meridiem – meaning before midday in Latin PM= Post Meridiem – meaning after midday

4 Film Times 24 Hour Time Analogue 4 o’clock 16:00 17:00 5 o’clock 19:00
21:00 9 o’clock

5 Why? Why do we use 24 hour time?
If we just used the digital time 07:00 how would we know if it meant 7 o’clock in the morning or at night. That is why we need 24 hour time. If was now written 07:00. You know its 7 in the morning. If it was 19:00, you know it is 7 at night.

6 Timetables Learning Intention
Students will learn how to identify how to read timetables.

7 Vocab Timetable A chart showing the departure and arrival times of trains, buses or planes is called a timetable.

8 Looking at a Timetable

9 Questions What time does the Flinders to Lilydale train reach East Richmond Station? How long does it take from leaving the city to reach Lilydale? What other train could I take if I needed to get to Lilydale?

10 Elapsed Time Activity Learning Intention:
Students will learn how to calculate the elapsed time. How is time used in your daily lives. Amount of time it takes to get to football, dance or soccer practice. Amount of time they are supposed to do their homework. The times school starts and ends. You need to open up the interactive clock. Show the following times on your clock: 3:15 2:05 12:43 Now show these times 3 hours later Have students share the strategies they used to solve this problem.

11 Elapsed Time Calculate the Elapsed Time
The elapsed time of an activity is the total time that it takes to perform that activity from its start to its end.

12 Activity If a movie starts at 3:15pm and ends at 5:45pm, then the elapsed time can be calculated using a T-chart as follows: 3:15 pm 5:45pm 4:15 pm 1 hour 5:15 pm 5:25 pm 10 min 5:35 pm 5:45 pm The total elapsed time is 1 hr +1 hr + 10 min + 10min + 10min = 2 hr and 30 min

13 You have just demonstrated elapsed time.
What is the definition of elapsed time: the amount of time it takes to go from start to finish

14 New Activity “This morning you arrived at school at 8:45 AM and Math began at 12:15 PM. How much time has passed?” Let’s use a T-chart Watch the whiteboard – if you need this later it is on the blog

15 Your Turn Record the following questions in your Math notebooks.
How much time will elapse between breakfast and lunch? How many hours are you in school each day? How long does it take you to ride the bus to school each day (or walk to school)?

16 Activity - Blog Access the blog and click on the Time Elapsed Activity. There are three levels – easy, medium and hard. Your choice where you start but you must complete two activities in total.

17 Revisit Learning Intention
Students will learn how to convert between the 24 hour notation and the 12 hour notation. Students will learn how to identify how to read timetables. Students will learn how to calculate the elapsed time.
