Three Questions to Ask About Any Website Or, How do you know who to trust?

1. Who created this website ? If you can’t find an author or organization associated with the site, don’t use it! Check the About Us or Contact Us link on a website to find out more about what the author or organization says about themselves. Look for a Home button or delete everything after the domain name to find the home page.

Your Turn! Look at these two sites, both of which come up in a Google search for “what are the healthiest foods.” Which source would you trust more? Why? http://www.cspinet.org/nah/10foods_bad.html http://www.dwlz.com/HealthyLife/healthy50.html

2. What is the domain name on this website and what is their purpose?. gov = government.edu = education.org = non-profit organization.com and.biz = commerce/business.net or ~ = network or individual.mil = military

Your Turn! Here are two websites that differ only in the domain name. Look at both sites. How are the two sites different? How are they similar? Could you have guessed this from the domain names? http://wwf.panda.org/ http://pandaunite.org/

3. How does the information on this site compare with what I already know? Be skeptical of a website that contains any wrong information. Be skeptical of websites that say something radically different from what is generally accepted to be true unless they give good evidence for why its views are so different.

Your Turn! Here are two websites. Using your background knowledge of this topic which is the more accurate one and why? http://www.dreamweaverstudios.com/moonbeam/mo on.htm http://www.dreamweaverstudios.com/moonbeam/mo on.htm http://www.visithalfmoonbay.org/things-to-do
