2  A time zone is a region of the Earth that has adopted the same standard time, usually referred to as the local time Earthstandard timeEarthstandard time  Most adjacent time zones are exactly one hour apart  It is based on the earth’s rotation from west to east every 24h

3  The earth passes through 360º = 15º for each hour (360/24=15)  Sometimes we have irregularly- shaped zones that follow political boundaries (eg. NL time half hour difference) or that change their time seasonally (as with daylight saving time) daylight saving time daylight saving time

4  The (1 st )first Time zone starts at the Prime Meridian (0º longitude) and is called Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)  Time zones west of 0º are 1 hour earlier  Time zones east of 0º are 1 hour later  The two sides meet at 180º, this forms the International Date Line – at this point the date changes either one day ahead or one day back
